Offensive line issues will effect both teams
For the Seahawks
The big question mark for the Seattle Seahawks, will John Moffitt (Knee) be able to play on Sunday. John has not practiced all week, nevertheless Head Coach Pete Carroll said that they have not yet decided if he will play, much like Russell Okung a couple weeks ago.
Russell had to miss that game, let us hope for a better outcome with John. Pete hasn’t confirmed how the offensive line will fill in for John, but I think it is pretty evident.
James Carpenter is back from his knee injury suffered last season and is making the transition from right tackle to left guard. I expect James to start eventually at left guard as long as he is healthy. (Maybe not Sunday due to stamina)
If John cannot play, Paul McQuistan will likely get the start at right guard in his absence. Carroll has indicated that rookie guard JR Sweezy is an “option”. That is if John is inactive.
The only way I see Sweezy playing is if Carpenter or McQuistan get injured during the game.
Though Leroy Hill is listed as questionable, Pete Carroll indicated that he will indeed play in Sunday’s game against the Rams.
Anthony McCoy is listed as questionable. If he is unable to play the Seahawks, who use a significant amount of 2 tight end sets, will only have 2 tight ends active for the game. The Hawks released TE Sean McGrath from the practice squad on the 27th.
Being down to two tight ends shouldn’t effect the play calling too much, however, if Zach Miller or Evan Moore were to get injured during the game, the Seahawks offense would be forced to adjust.
That is not a good scenario for a struggling offense with an anemic passing attack.
For the Rams
If I were a Rams fan, I would be worried about the Seahawks pass rush, then I’d burn my jersey and become a Seahawks fan. The Rams’ starting left tackle Rodger Saffold is out with a knee injury.
His backup, former Seahawk tackle Wayne Hunter, is also listed as out with a knee injury.
The Rams released their third string left tackle on thursday to pick up tackle Joe Barksdale, who had been waived by the Raiders earlier in the week. Looking at their roster, I can only assume Barksdale will get the start at left tackle.
If this is indeed the case, it will be the first start of Joe’s NFL career, as well as his first game action of the 2012 season.
The biggest name on the Rams injury report is running back Steven Jackson (Groin). Steven has never gained 100-yards against a Seahawks defense. Maybe he should just take the week off.
Leroy Hill is listed as questionable, Pete Carroll indicated that he will indeed play
Even if he is able to play I doubt he will come close to reaching the century mark in Sunday’s game.
The Seahawks pass rush is in prime position to prove that they can sustain consistent pressure without the aid of the 12th man.
The St. Louis Rams have given up the second most sacks in the NFL, and the fifth most quarterback hits.
The Rams are without starting left tackle, and their second string left tackle. The Seattle Seahawks sixth ranked sack defense should be able to get after Sam Bradford.
If the Seahawks defensive line fails to pressure Sam on Sunday, I will be concerned that it is going to be an issue all season long.
