The loss of Rashawn Slater to the Charger’s offensive line is probably the worst news we could have received following a loss. Slater went out late in the third quarter in yesterdays 38-10 loss against the Jaguars. Earlier today, Adam Schefter reported that the All-Pro suffered a torn bicep tendon, and is likely to miss the rest of the season. Here, we will go over each scenario, ranging from most likely to the least likely, that could be possible solutions for Los Angeles.

Most Likely Scenario: Storm Norton fills in at LT for an injured Slater

Storm Norton is the next man up on the Charger’s depth chart. We saw him come in when Pipkins left early in week two against Kansas City. Arguably a large part in Justin Herbert taking so many shots in that game. In addition, we saw him come in and attempt to cover down for the injured All-Pro in the 38-10 loss, where Herbert was pressured a whopping 25 times. Eight of the 25 pressures came from Storm Norton playing only in one half.

Unlikely but Possible Scenario: Trey Pipkins gets flexed to LT and Storm Norton fills in at RT

There is no doubt that Left Tackle is the more important position compared to the right side. Trey Pipkins won the Right Tackle job in training camp away from Storm Norton who carried the load last season. Pipkins has played well throughout the first three weeks protecting Herbert’s right side. Allowing the human turnstile Norton to protect Herbert’s blind side should not be an option.

Least Likely Scenario: Matt Feiler moves to LT and Rookie Jamaree Salyer plays LG

Matt Feiler was an absolute rock for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2021. Feiler only gave up 21 pressures across the entire season last year. He was also surrounded by Corey Linsley and Rashawn Slater for the entire season, two All-Pro talents. So far this year being surrounded by either Norton, or Clapp, Feiler has given up 14 pressures through three games.

Feiler played in the Tackle spot for four years with the Pittsburgh Steelers before coming to LA. Perhaps throwing the veteran back in at tackle, and allowing the rookie to develop between him and Linsley could help soften the blow of losing Slater.

The Chargers head into Houston on the road with a sizeable injury list. They open up as -6 point favorites against the Texans.
