It’s been the Tom Brady show since 2007, but before that, the defense was a thing of beauty in New England. The likes of Richard Seymour, Asante Samuel, Mike Vrabel and Ted Bruschi carved out the Patriot Way; they played it hard, but worked it harder. This is the defense Bill Belichick wants, he’s just waiting for them to grow up. Belichick has his pass rusher in Chandler Jones, a versatile linebacker in Dont’a Hightower, and young tough corner in Alfonzo Dennard.  All three are rookies, who will be the make or break players in the postseason, and each have a bookend veteran that will force the action their way. Vince Wilfork is the key for Chandler Jones, he draws the double teams, and although he’s listed at nose tackle, he is rarely over the center. Wilfork can slide to a 4-3 tackle giving Jones the one on one with an offensive tackle, that’s the matchup on the line. Jerod Mayo is the bookend to Hightower, they have skill sets so close that the question here is how fast can Hightower grasp playoff pro football? Where Jones gets by on athletic ability, Hightower is more of a mental player, which could be a double edged sword sometimes. Hightower played more like a seasoned veteran than a rookie, but he hasn’t seen everything yet and that is where he’ll need Mayo, to keep his mental in check. Aqib Talib was brought in to replace Ras-I Dowling and the new Belichick concept of big corners. One only has to look at the Seattle Seahawks with Brandon Browner and Richard Sherman as examples. Talib takes away chunks of space and can play a true man to man concept. Dennard will be the corner the other team targets, and he seems to be up for the challenge. He reminds us of a young Ty Law, short and stocky; a physical who reacts as good to the ball in the air that we haven't seen in a Patriots uniform since Law. Dennard is tough against the run and there isn’t another corner on the Patriots close to fitting what the Patriots need outside, which is someone who will fight (sorry Kyle Arrington). Those are the three rookies who have played big roles, and once the playoffs start; they'll have to step up their game even more. var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});

Woodhead Has Been At Best Down The Stretch For Patriots

Little big man: Danny Woodhead often leaves some opposing defenders with this look as they try to figure out how a person his size got by them. When the Patriots need a spark on offense, which believe it or not, they sometimes do, the team often finds themselves turning to the little man with the big heart, Danny Woodhead. The 5-foot-8-inch running back from the slightly undersized...

Source: Gronkowski practices at normal level, should be ready for playoffs

Good news for the New England Patriots, as tight end Rob Gronkowski has increased his practice workload to the normal level that prepares him for a game, according to a source familiar with how the team’s practice repetitions were divided, per Mike Reiss of ESPN Boston. That means, even if we don't see him Sunday against the Miami Dolphins, he'll be ready for the playoffs...

Report: Rob Gronkowski might play against the Dolphins

According to Tom Curran of CSNNE.com, Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is expected to suit up for tomorrow’s game against the Dolphins and at least have a limited role. It looks like the Patriots are trying to get Gronk some reps to shake some of the rust off as they head into the playoffs.     Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement...

The Patriots — as long as they don’t make the Super Bowl — will be well represented in the 2013 Pro Bowl with seven players. The Patriots finished third in the NFL, behind the 49ers (nine) and the Texans (eight) in NFL Pro Bowlers. Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Rob Gronkowski, Logan Mankins, Vince Wilfork, Jerod Mayo and Matthew Slater were all named to the AFC squad, according to...

Drew Bledsoe jokingly rips Tom Brady's speed

For some reason Bledsoe ended up deleting this tweet and then going with the much safer "Way faster than Tommy". While I guess he was probably concerned about some backlash from his swearing, that probably wasn't necessary. The original tweet, above, was way funnier.I don't think anyone would doubt Bledsoe is faster than Tom Brady. Brady's been asked pretty...

Report: Gronk expected to play

A report says Rob Gronkowski is expected to play for the Patriots against the Dolphins in Week 17. He has been out since Week 11.

Vote: If He’s Cleared, Should Rob Gronkowski Sunday Versus the Dolphins?

In sports, it’s a conundrum nearly as old as the ball itself. When staring down at a sure-thing playoff slot but with more regular season to go, do you rest your players, or keep them on the field? Unfortunately, with the patriots and tight end Rob Gronkowski, it’s a little more complicated than even that. Gronkowski has missed every game since Week 11 when he fractured his forearm...

Seven Patriots will play in Pro Bowl, do you even care?

I for one could care less. Who watches this game? It's great for players to be honored with a pro bowl selection but it becomes such a joke of a game. After injuries, etc. there's always a ton of players that get into the Pro Bowl despite probably not deserving it. Andy Dalton played in the Pro Bowl last year. Gil Santos Winds Down a Career

For many New England Patriots fans the baritone sound of Gil Santos’ voice meant that another fall was taking shape in New England.  For 36 years (1966-1979, 1991-2012), Santos has been the voice of New England Patriots football. In 1966 Santos and the legendary Bob Starr replaced Bob Gallagher and Ned Martin in the broadcast booth and it was the start of a New England love...

Miami Dolphins at New England Patriots: Week 17 NFL Pick

Miami Dolphins (7-8) at New England Patriots (11-4) I can’t handicap week 17 games like I do other games (maybe that’s a good thing because I’ve had a rough few weeks), because one of the things I do is look for upcoming distractions and dynamic changes on their schedule. In week 17, I can’t do that, so instead I have to look at what this game means do these two teams. The...

Miami Dolphins versus New England Patriots points spread, line and betting odds

The Miami Dolphins will play against the New England Patriots on Sunday. CBS will carry the game which kicks off at 4:25 pm EST from Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA. What is the points...

NFL.com has Bruce Arians above Bill Belichick as Coach of the Year

In a recent piece on the Coach of the Year award, NFL.com's Gregg Rosenthal breaks things down in tiers. The top tier being the top choices for the award. The names on that list include Bruce Arians, Pete Carroll, Mike Smith and Jim Harbaugh. No Belichick. Here is Rosenthall's reasoning for leaving Belichick off that top tier of coaches.Belichick's defense hasn't quite...

Round Table: Late Season Momentum

After a lackluster performance against the Jaguars with many starters out of the mix, how concerned are you that the Patriots may be a little rusty for their opening playoff game? Stephen:  Despite the stinker the Patriots threw up in Jacksonville, I'm not concerned about them being rusty for their opening playoff game. After Tom Brady ripped into the team in the locker...
