The Titans’ defense, through four games, has been nothing short of horrible, ranking last or near last in the major statistical categories — points allowed, total yards allowed, passing yards, and rushing yards. Statistics aside, they can’t seem to defend the middle of the field on a consistent basis, drawing the ire of coordinator Jerry Gray.

Heading into their Week 5 matchup against the suddenly pass-happy Vikings, Gray attempted to put an end to the struggles, urging his bunch to ‘blow up’ the opposition, regardless of fines or injuries.

“If you are worrying about that, you are not going to go out and try and blow the guy up,” Gray said, via The Tennessean. “Great football players have to put that out of their mind. You have to say, ‘This is my territory between the numbers, and if you throw the football you better bring the Gator truck.’ And that’s how you have to play. You can’t play timid in the NFL.”

The Gator refers to the cart teams use to remove severely injured players from the field. I know what you’re thinking — “cart-off” a la Gregg Williams, the former conspirator of BountyGate. Interestingly enough, Gray used to work for Williams, and apparently adopted an ugly habit when firing up his unit.

Having been outscored 41-13 in the first quarter and allowed a staggering 151 points thus far, Gray, who’s in his second season with the club, believes the Titans are playing “too timid,” a poor reflection of his coaching.

“Have we blown anybody up? … Maybe we are playing too timid,” Gray said. “We can’t give up touchdowns as soon as we get off the bus. We didn’t do that last year. You can’t give up touchdowns in the first quarter and expect to get sacks and expect to get turnovers.”

“I don’t coach a defense like this, and I don’t think they intend to play a defense like that,” Gray said. “But when it happens, what do you do to fix it? And that is our job. We have 12 weeks to fix it.”
