Titans Legend Derrick Henry to debut with Ravens vs Chiefs in NFL Season Opener
USA TODAY Sports

For the first time in eight seasons, the Tennessee Titans will not have Derrick Henry in the backfield. The former second-round draft pick hit free agency for the first time in his career this year.

Henry will make his debut for the Baltimore Ravens against the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in the NFL’s season opener on September 5.

The league announced on Monday that its 2024 campaign would begin with a rematch of last season's AFC Championship. Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson won the regular season NFL MVP Award, his second, but could not get past Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City. The Ravens fell 17-10 and could not establish their league-leading rushing attack, held to 16 total carries for 81 yards.

Mahomes led the Chiefs to a second straight Super Bowl title and third title in five seasons.

Tennessee moved on from Henry, former starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill and head coach Mike Vrabel among others this offseason. Henry finished with the second most rushing yards in football (1,167) and 12 touchdowns behind one of the NFL’s worst offensive line units. He can still be a highly effective weapon with better surroundings.

The Titans have also significantly upgraded their offense around quarterback Will Levis with the cap relief that Henry and Tannehill’s expiring contracts provided.

Tennessee does not play Baltimore or Kansas City in the 2024 regular season. The NFL’s full schedule will be released on Wednesday May 15 at 7 p.m. CT on NFL Network.
