Witherspoon, who returned to Nashville late Saturday following funeral services for his mother, indeed played and started the Titans' regular-season opener Sunday, registering a sack, six tackles, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hurry in a 38-13 victory over Oakland in Nashville. His mother, Nora Lee Cooper Witherspoon, was 56.
Witherspoon received word of his mother's death Tuesday.
"I'm honoring what my mother would have wanted me to do," Witherspoon said following a dominant performance by the Titans' defense. "I've had to focus on my family and make sure they were OK.
