For the Titans and quarterback Jake Locker the news isn’t great but it could be worse. After a number of tests on Locker's injured right hip indications are the damage isn’t as bad as initially feared and surgery won’t be needed. But the third-year pro is expected to miss at least 4-6 weeks and possibly more depending on rehab according to those familiar with the situation. At his weekly press conference today coach Mike Munchak would only say that the injury is not season ending and initial tests on the hip were encouraging. There is still enough swelling in the hip that Locker will need another MRI on Tuesday to determine the full extent of the injury and a timetable for return the coach said. Locker who will not play this Sunday against the Chiefs at LP Field released a statement: “I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers over the last 24 hours. I am going to work as hard as I can to get back as soon as I can. I believe in this team and will do whatever I can to help us win in the meantime.” Locker was injured in the third quarter of Sunday’s 38-13 win over the Jets when defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and Quinton Coples hit him as he threw a pass. Initial tests at LP Field didn’t indicate the hip had popped out of joint Munchak said. Locker was admitted to Saint Thomas Medical Center on Sunday afternoon released on Monday morning and returned to the team facility for more treatment. Locker also suffered a minor knee injury Munchak said. Veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick who finished Sunday’s game will take over for Locker. Rusty Smith currently on the practice squad could be promoted to the 53-man roster by week’s end. Munchak would not commit to Smith being Fitzpatrick’s backup however and said the Titans would bring in other quarterbacks on Tuesday for workouts.
