PLAYERS: Shaun Smith
TEAMS: Tennessee Titans
The Tennessee Titans have released veteran defensive tackle Shaun Smith a year after signing him to boost their defense. The Titans signed Smith in July 2011 hoping to bring his experience and size to the defense. But Smith started only six of 15 games last season with 44 tackles and one sack, and the Titans have picked four tackles in the past two drafts. Smith lost weight this offseason yet had only one tackle in two preseason games. The eight-year veteran tweeted Wednesday morning that it was time to see what team he will be with next and that he should have made better ''life decisions.''

Titans WR Marc Mariani breaks leg in gruesome injury (Video)

Lower guys on the totem pole are busting their tails to fill the last few available roster spots while the starters and confirmed back-ups are trying to get sharp and stay healthy.  But preseason football is still football.  And with football comes nasty gruesome injuries.  Marc Mariani, a third-year receiver for the Tennessee Titans, was the unfortunate victim of a disgusting...

Titans ready for Locker to get offense into air

Now that Jake Locker has the job as Tennessee's starting quarterback, the Titans want him to start throwing the ball more. Locker gets his chance Thursday night at home when Tennessee plays Arizona in its third exhibition game. The second-year quarterback is 11 of 24 for 101 yards with one interception and a passer rating of 40.5 through two games. Coach Mike Munchak says they...

Titans sign McCourty to 5-year extension

The Tennessee Titans announced today cornerback Jason McCourty signed a contract extension that will keep him a Titan through 2017. McCourty had been slated to make $1.26 million in this, the final year of the deal he signed when the Titans selected him out of Rutgers in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL draft. Adam Schefter indicates the extension is for $43 million over 5 years,...

Short suspension for Titans’ Kenny Britt?

Kenny Britt has been arrested 8 times in his NFL career thus far, after going in the 1st round in 2009. He would have been suspended last season if it hasn’t been for Roger Goodell’s decision to excuse any arrests that happened during the lockout, during which Britt was arrested 3 times. However, after a recent DUI, Britt is expecting a suspension after a 2nd visit to the commissioner’s...

Tennessee Titans extend CB Jason McCourty

The Titans are taking a risk giving McCourty this 5 year, 43 million dollar deal with 20 million guaranteed. McCourty was actually thrown on more frequently than any cornerback in the league last year, being thrown on once every 4.6 coverage snaps. However, this was because opposing quarterbacks feared throwing on Cortland Finnegan, the opposite cornerback and the Titans’ #1 cornerback...

Jake Locker needs to develop during the 2012 season

After finally getting around to watching Jake Locker's performance against the Buccaneers, all I can say is "wow," and not in the good way. Locker was accused of looking lost against the Buccaneers, but that's not what I saw from the young quarterback. I've seen some of that finicky energy before from another quarterback in the AFC South, Blaine Gabbert...

Locker has 2 TDs as Titans beat Cardinals

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Jake Locker showed why the Tennessee Titans picked him as their starting quarterback. The Arizona Cardinals leave town still trying to figure out their own situation after neither John Skelton nor Kevin Kolb looked very impressive. Locker threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in his home debut as Tennessee's starting quarterback, and the Titans beat...

Improved Locker helps Titans top Cardinals, 32-27

It was a lot more interesting late than it was early, but the Titans tonight improved to 2-1 in the preseason with a 32-27 win over the Arizona Cardinals thanks to a fourth-quarter touchdown run by Jamie Harper. The bigger storylines out of the game, though, were Jake Locker's first start as a starter and a gruesome injury that will cost Marc Mariani the 2012 season.Jake Locker...

Tennessee Titans second preseason game review: Defense

I've covered Jake Locker and the rest of the offense, which means it's time for me to turn my attention to how the Titans' defense performed in the second preseason game against the Buccaneers. As was the case with the offense, the numbers on the statsheet are impressive: six first downs and only 81 net yards of offense, with 33 of those coming on the Bucs' final possession...
