Tom Martinez could not have picked a greater legacy holder for his professional career than Tom Brady.
Martinez passed away Tuesday night, on his birthday, but he’ll always be remembered as the guy who could fix Brady when the star QB needed tweaking.
Throughout the years, Martinez’s name would surface and float around like fireflies lighting up a football conversation that’s deep is discussion. “You know that’s the guy who gets Tom right you know?”
Martinez, known as “The Mechanic”, was an old school football coach who ran one of the most successful programs in the country on the community college level.
He is considered as one of the greatest community college coaches in history. Having worked with John Elway in his early years, Martinez honed his craft to develop gifted quarterbacks that lead to the greatest work of art: Tom Brady.
Brady went back to California every year for his tutelage. Think about the fact he didn’t go to Brady, Brady came to him, even when he became a star.
He stayed in the background and retired in 2005 for health reasons, but continued to mentor his prized student.
Brady refers to him as his personal coach. That’s a pretty big job, but we guess it’s not that daunting since he had been doing it since 1992 when Brady was just 15.
His legacy lives on through his years of work. When Tom Brady walks on the field, he’s the spokesman for Martinez. We all know Brady is a class act and we know where it all started. Tom Martinez, the coach who always fixed Brady.
There’s a certain trust between quarterback and his coach. Much like a car and a mechanic, the car knows the mechanic could fix all of its ills. Brady has lost his mechanic so to speak, but what Martinez was able to do is create a car and memories that are priceless.
Thank you Tom Martinez - February 21, 1946 – February 21, 2012
