Tom Coughlin is convinced that they New York Giants were on their way to repeat Super Bowl ring in 2008 when Plaxico Burress infamously shot himself. He recently lamented on the incident when he filmed an upcoming episode of CenterStage on the YES Network. While speaking with host Michael Kay, Coughlin spoke about how good they were at the time of the self-shooting, via NJ.com “We were the best team in the NFL at the time of the shooting,” Coughlin said. The Giants were 10-1 at the time of the incident, coming off a huge win against the Baltimore Ravens, where they ripped off 207 rushing yards against what was the top-rushing defense in the league. Burress and his ability to draw double-teams that season aided the leagues top rushing attack, as teams were less likely to put a safety at the box. The Giants did win the following Sunday against a weak Washington squad, but finished 1-3 after that. Eli Mannig was never comfortable the rest of the way, and the Giants lost to the Eagles in the Divisonal Round, despite home field advantage.
