There were many positives to be taken away from Friday's 32-31 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but make no mistake about it, head coach Tom Coughlin believes the New York Giants have quite a bit of room for improvement. And during a Saturday afternoon conference call, he made sure to point out that it's not just the third team and other reserves that need to play better, but the starters as well.

“We have no illusion about the improvement that needs to be made. I'm talking from the top of our team to the bottom,” Coughlin said. “Pass protection, once we got into the depth of our team, wasn't very good. There are things back and forth; I didn't like our time of possession being only at about 26 minutes, which bothers me as well.”

Coughlin specifically pointed out Prince Amukamara for having a sub par game, but did credit the cornerback for coming back mentally and forcing a fumble after being beaten twice on the previous drive. He also expressed disappointment in his defense for allowing two 80+ yard touchdown drives, as well as the two muffed punts – one by Jayron Hosley and the other by Jerrel Jernigan.

Not everything was focused on the negative, however. Coughlin praised a few of his linebackers -Mathias Kiwanuka, Keith Rivers and Mark Herzlich- whom he thought had superb games, and rookie running back David Wilson who flashed some serious speed in the open field.

“He showed us some things we can depend on going forward,” Coughlin said of Wilson, calling him "a plus."

In closing, the coach added that Domenik Hixon could have played if it were a meaningful game, but was held out for precautionary reasons. Meanwhile, wide receiver David Douglas missed the game because of a sore quad.

The New York Giants resume training camp practice this afternoon at 1:00 PM EST and break camp this coming Wednesday.
