Per a report for the New York Daily News Gary Myers, New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was so frustrated with his 2-time Super Bowl MVP quarterback Eli Manning that he used “terrible” and “foolish” to describe instances where Manning should have protected the ball better versus trying to make a play. Coughlin typically generalizes his criticism publicly, rarely singling out an individual performance, but he did not mince words when talking about Manning’s two 3rd quarter interceptions that put the game on ice by extending a Cincinnati Bengals’ lead from 17-6 to 31-6: “Oh, that was terrible. He’d be the first one to tell you that. That was so foolish to try to make a play there. The one guy has got his shirt — just go down, take care of the ball and let us have another snap. Just take care of the football. I know he’s always trying to make a play and he has done things under those circumstances in the past that have worked out, but the percentages were just not with you when that happens.” When asked if he was “stunned” Manning made the second mistake so quickly, Coughlin agreed: “That’s a pretty good word. To have it happen that quickly, yes. I know how hard he’s pressing to make a play. That’s what he’s trying to do.” There is no doubt Manning is in a slump. Over the last Giants last six games, his passer rating has plummeted: 103.3 (CLE), 87.4 (SF), 78.9 (WAS), 58.4 (DAL), 41.1 (PIT), and 56.0 (CIN). It’s a miracle the Giants are 4-2 over that span, losing just the last two. There are rumors that Manning is suffering from a “tired arm,” rumors which Manning and Coughlin deny. Manning has attempted the 4th most passes this year (364), so it’s not a stretch to say the bye week will do him and his arm some good. You can read a comparison article between Eli and Peyton Manning here, which further breaks down Eli’s performance as it compares to Peyton’s this year.
