Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said he will have a better idea on quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's status after Wednesday's practice.

Roethlisberger sat out last week's win over the St. Louis Rams with a high ankle sprain. He played with the injury in a 20-3 loss at San Francisco on Dec. 19.

Veteran Charlie Batch threw for 208 yards and an interception against the Rams, but Tomlin said his performance will have no bearing on whether Roethlisberger plays in the regular-season finale at the Cleveland Browns.

“It’s our intention right now that if a guy’s healthy enough to practice and prepare, then we’ll play him,” Tomlin said Tuesday.

Pittsburgh (11-4) is tied with Baltimore atop the AFC North, but the Steelers were swept by the Ravens in the season series.

If the teams remain tied, the Ravens will wind up with either the No. 1 or 2 seed and the Steelers will drop to the No. 5 seed in the playoffs.

Pittsburgh also has a chance for the top overall seed and home-field advantage throughout the playoffs with a win and losses by the Ravens and New England Patriots.

Roethlisberger has thrown for 21 touchdowns and 14 interceptions and is 144 yards shy of his second career 4,000-yard season.
