Tony Gonzalez says Matt Ryan isn’t an elite QB in the NFL. (AP Photo/Rick Osentoski) Future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez knows a thing or two about the NFL. For many seasons he played on bad teams, and for many years played on very good teams. He knows a thing or two about quarterbacks as well, and his recent comments about Falcons QB Matt Ryan may be surprising. In a recent interview with ESPN the Magazine, Gonzalez said that Matt Ryan isn’t an elite quarterback – as many analysts say he is. “Matt’s an excellent quarterback. But he’s not elite. He’s this close” said Gonzalez. Now of course he ins’t bashing Ryan, but he is telling it like it is. Matt is a very good quarterback, and one that many GM’s would love to have on their roster. But he’s not elite. Ryan had a down year after signing a five-year, $103.75 million extension in July – but it wasn’t any fault of his own. His offensive line took a step back and he lost several targets along the way, including Julio Jones to a season-ending foot injury. Ryan passed for 4,515 yards and 26 touchdowns on the season just a year after leading the Falcons to the NFC Championship Game, however the results were completely different as Atlanta missed the playoffs with a 4-12 record. The team has some work to do, but they have several key pieces that will be returning next season. Gonzalez isn’t one of them, as he officially retired with the NFL following the Pro-Bowl.   Follow us on Twitter @DownandDistance Sports-Kings Network Manager – Justin Arbogast @NFLGuy_SK The post Tony Gonzalez: Matt Ryan is not an Elite Quarterback appeared first on DOWN & DISTANCE - Presented by Sports-Kings.

  • Finally, this truth has been made public by someone (Tony Gonzalez)with real legitimate knowledge.

Ryan is not worth his salary.
  • TG just told it like it is. I have said over the last two seasons that Matt Ryan is a ONE DIMENSIONAL QB (pocket passer). He has no heart, if you are to ever become an Elite QB you have to scarifice yourself at many levels, because your team reacts to your production and willingness to give your all. The Falcon's need a REAL LEADER...not a poster boy!

Could Tony Gonzalez come back late in 2014?

Matt Ryan elite or not?

Over the last few years the word “elite” seems to define an NFL quarterback. What makes a quarterback elite? It does not seem there are predetermined factors that allow us to give that title to a player. Matt Ryan of the Atlanta Falcons is one of the best young quarterbacks in the game, elite or not. While he might not be elite, to those imaginary standards, Ryan had more regular...

Tony Gonzalez: Matt Ryan Is Not an Elite QB

Tony Gonzalez wanted to be traded at the trade deadline

While the Falcons’ season was going down in flames, Tony Gonzalez publicly confessed that he wouldn’t pressure the Falcons to trade him to a contender. It was easy to take Gonzalez’s comments at face value mainly because Gonzalez remained with a Falcons team that ended the season 4-12. But privately, there apparently was a different story playing out. Seth Wickersham shadowed...
