Traditionally, Madison Avenue loves a winner.

Case in point: just look at the latest slew of ads this season that will feature Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning and breakout receiver Victor Cruz of the New York Giants.

And no, you can add much-maligned Dallas Cowboys quarterback to that list.

Tony Romo, winner? Well, not exactly.

Romo is the star of a new ad campaign by apparel-maker Starter, entitled "Romo Responds." The video opens with the lines, "People focus on what we haven’t accomplished. They focus on mistakes."

Then, a series of clips of Romo working out appear, with his voice running through even more of what his critics have said. Trademark hat-on-backwards look, serious look on his face, Romo sums it all up with this one line:

"That's what I'm focused on, too."

Very inspiring stuff. All that's missing is Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger" playing in the background.

Look, Tony Romo seems like a nice enough guy and all, and I give him credit for acknowledging the critics and vowing to change.

But it just seems as if no matter what he does, how hard he tries, people still don't take him seriously. And the critics will continue to have a field day with this ad.

So here's a little bit of advice, Tony: keep working hard, keep proving the critics wrong, and win that elusive title.

Then, you can do all the commercials you want when advertisers inevitably come knocking at your door. Kind of like what Eli, Drew Brees, and Aaron Rodgers (to name a few) have done the past few years.

Until then, lay low. Sometimes no publicity is actually better than negative publicity. It's stuff like this that just adds fuel to your critics' fire.

And gets people like me to write columns about you.
