Hard to believe that we are only 4 weeks away from the start of training camp, and it was during last years preseason that New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning referred to himself as an elite QB.  Now, former teammate and Giant Amani Toomer is saying that Eli isn’t even the best QB in his division. He says that honor belongs to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo.

“Tony Romo is probably — if you look at him statistically — he’s probably the best quarterback in the NFC East,” Toomer said. “I mean, you look at Eli Manning and what he does in the fourth quarter. But you talk about consistency — talk about 31 touchdowns and only 10 interceptions. That guy can play.

There are only a few QBs in the league that jump off the page and nobody is going to argue against them as being the best. Brady, Rodgers, Brees and we will throw Peyton in there as well. But after that, it’s a toss-up for the next 5-12 QBs. You are splitting hairs at that point (But seriously, Jaws, Flacco isn’t top 10). Eli and Romo are both outstanding quarterbacks, and trying to argue one is clearly better than the other is extremely difficult to do. It really is simply a matter of opinion, and there is no way to really tangibly prove one is better than the other. They both have solid statistics, with Romo’s being overall, better, but Eli has been incredibly solid the last several years and obviously the hugely successful late in games. He also has those two Super Bowl rings and MVP trophies. Eli did have a fantastic season a year ago, but I find it hard to argue that he is actually a better QB, from a mechanical and physical tool capability. That being said, if the game is on the line, I want Eli in the game for me, because he has come through more than most QBs late in the 4th quarter.

Toomer’s words are sure to fire up Giants fans, but probably not like those of another former Giants player, Tiki Barber, who said much more mean-spirited words about Eli. But Toomer shouldn’t be skewered by fans for what he said, because it was simply just his opinion.
