TEAMS: New York Jets
The New York Jets were the first franchise to get into the alternate market when they donned their 25th anniversary of Super Bowl III “fauxbacks” in 1993. Not to be outdone, the rest of the NFL joined them in 1994, dusting off throwback looks from various eras as the league celebrated its 75th season. The trend coincided with the building throwback mania in pop culture as hipsters and hip-hoppers stepped out in the latest $350 Mitchell & Ness recreation. Owners quickly realized fans were eager to double or triple down on alternate and/or nostalgic team merchandise.Like any retail pandemonium, some mistakes were made and apologies are in order.(A special thanks to the Gridiron Uniform Database for compiling the most comprehensive source of NFL uniforms on the interwebs).
