In fantasy football, defense/special teams is often overlooked. Most people don’t realize that if their fantasy team’s defense/special teams knocks one out of the park, it could be the difference between losing a close matchup and winning. With that being said, here are my top 5 fantasy football defense/special teams for week 3.

5) Houston Texans (VS Denver Broncos)

Denver is coming off a short week after their Monday night game against Atlanta, giving Peyton Manning less time to prepare for an already intimidating defense. Defensive Coordinator Wade Phillips has no problem bringing the heat and has a lot of weapons to choose from when it comes to getting in Peyton Manning’s face. Even though Manning is one of the best when it comes to recognizing pressure and getting out of bad situations, it’ll be interesting to see how Wade Phillips chooses to combat him.

4) Detroit Lions (VS Tennessee Titans)

Even though Detroit’s defense has been less than stellar so far this year, Tennessee’s offense has been dismal. The Titans have allowed opposing  defenses to run up 24 fantasy points (in standard scoring leagues) thus far this season. The only team that has given up more is the Chicago Bears. More on that later, though. Chris Johnson, who was supposed to strike fear into opposing defenses, is quickly turning into one of the most monumental fantasy running back flops of all time. I don’t see him breaking out of his slump this week. He’s had a total of 21 rushing yards this season including 4 yards  Even though Detroit’s run defense hasn’t been great this year (they gave up 148 rushing yards last week) they’ll get some good opportunities to look better this week.

3) Buffalo Bills (VS Cleveland Browns)

Even though Brandon Weeden looked much improved from week 1 to week 2, so did Buffalo’s defense. The team recorded three turnovers and five sacks against the Chiefs last week and helped turn a game that was supposed to be close (according to ESPN at least) into an old fashioned beat down. The Bills pass rush looked great last week compared to week 1. Just ask Matt Cassel. I’d expect the Bills to have a field day with Cleveland’s weak offensive line.

2) New York Jets (VS Miami Dolphins)

The Jets have the honor of facing Ryan Tannehill and the Miami Dolphins in week 3. The defense should have no problem wreaking havoc on rookie QB Ryan Tannehill and forcing him to make some bad decisions. There are only a few things I would be concerned about in this matchup. Firstly, star cornerback Darelle Revis might be inactive due to a concussion suffered in week 1. Secondly, Reggie Bush had a huge game last week, and is always a threat to do it again. He has accounted for nearly 40% of the Dolphins offense so far this season. Basically, if the Jets can stop Reggie Bush and put pressure on the backfield, this defensive matchup is a no-brainer

1) St. Louis Rams (VS Chicago Bears)

I mentioned earlier that the Bears were the only team that had given up more fantasy points to opposing defenses than the Titans. Last week’s performance against the Packers was bad. And when I say bad, I mean BAD. Chicago gave up 7 sacks and Jay Cutler threw four interceptions. To make matters worse, Cutler ran his mouth both during and after the game about his offensive line. After being sacked to end a series in the second quarter, national TV cameras caught a heated exchange between Cutler and Left Tackle J’Marcus Webb. Cutler began hurling expletives at Webb before shoving him out of the way. This, in my opinion, is probably one of THE DUMBEST things for a quarterback to do. I don’t expect Cutler’s offensive line to go out of their way for him after his actions against Green Bay. Cutler think’s he’s on his own. And if he continues to spout off, he will be.

Dark horse candidates for the week:

1) Indianapolis Colts (Vs Jacksonville Jaguars)

Any time you get to play against Blaine Gabbert, there’s potential for defensive points. The Jaguars had a grand total of 117 offensive yards against Houston last week.

2) Baltimore Ravens (VS New England Patriots)

the Patriots got embarrassed last week. This one is a bit iffy because it would be foolish to ever count out Tom Brady and the Pats offense, but I think the Ravens smell blood in the water this week and do their best to avenge their loss in the AFC Title game last season.

3) Miami Dolphins (VS New York Jets)

This one all depends on which Jets team shows up. If the week 1 Jets show up in Miami, the ‘Fins are in big trouble. On the other side of the coin, if the week 2 Jets show up the Dolphins could have a field day with a mistake-prone Mark Sanchez.

Manning remains confident after loss in Atlanta

If Peyton Manning is sore, he's not saying. If his confidence is waning, he'd be the last to let anyone know. Back on the practice field following his first loss as a Denver Bronco, Manning wouldn't offer much Wednesday when asked if the hits he took against Atlanta had any lasting impact. ''I don't really get into that,'' Manning said. ''...

Why Peyton Manning Is So Good For The NFL

When word got out last year that Peyton Manning was not going to play in 2011, I for one was devastated.  I'm not a Colts fan just a huge NFL fan that knew I would miss the man, if for anything, his pure passion and knowledge of the game.I'm not going to throw a bunch of stats or anything to really make you think in this article, anyone who is a football fan knows, his stats...

Texans' offense could be ideal defense vs. Manning

The best way for the Houston Texans to defend Peyton Manning in Denver on Sunday may be to keep him off the field. The Texans (2-0) dominated possession with a punishing running game in last week's 27-7 victory over Jacksonville. Sure, the defense played well again, holding the Jaguars to nine first downs and 117 total yards. But thanks to the well-executed ball-control game...

Fan converts Manning jersey into Luck jersey

I understand the economy is rough, but converting an old Peyton Manning Colts jersey into an Andrew Luck jersey isn’t a very good luck, as you see from the picture above. It would have been better to just wear the Manning jersey and not alter it, or buy a Luck jersey. Who converts a Manning jersey to a Luck jersey? #ThisRedneck @nflrt twitter.com/AndrewLucksHea… — Andrew...

Manning falters early, Broncos lose to Falcons

Peyton Manning's second game with the Denver Broncos looked nothing like his first. Manning threw interceptions on Denver's first three possessions, and the Broncos could not recover from the poor start in a 27-21 loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Monday night. In a 3-hour, 27-minute game marred by questionable decisions from replacement officials and long clock stoppages...

Texans' offense could be ideal defense

HOUSTON (AP) -- The way Houston is dominating possession time, Peyton Manning might expect to spend lots of playing time on the sideline Sunday. The Texans (2-0) kept the ball with a punishing running game in last week's 27-7 victory over Jacksonville. Sure, the defense played well again, holding the Jaguars to nine first downs and 117 total yards. But thanks to the well-executed...

Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons: The Hero and the Zero

Denver had a late second half rally to get with in a one possession game, but at the end of the game, the unspeakable, horrendous, first half play of the Broncos was too much for Manning and the team to overcome.  As always, when the day is over we have to have a winner and a loser and yes, a hero and a zero.Let’s start with the zero today.  It would be easiest to point the finger...

ESPN Develops Most Confusing Next Level Voting System Ever

Not kidding, I spent five minutes at this screencap from ‏@pbsmith7 trying to figure out what the f*ck this voting system was. Who am I supposed to be voting for? What number do I enter? And they expect the morons who vote on this garbage to figure it out? Anyway, good game from Peyton Manning; 3INTs and a 58.5% QB rating. In other NFL news, how bad are the Kansas City Chiefs...

Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons: Five Things We Learned

After a weekend full of exciting football matchups, I was excited to watch the Monday night game featuring the meeting of two undefeated teams, the Denver Broncos visiting the Atlanta Falcons. Ok, the league has only played one week, but Denver was impressive in beating Pittsburgh 31 to 19 at home on September 9 in the Sunday night game while Atlanta used a dominant second half in...

What to say when your NFL player is in trouble with the law

Michael Turner's DUI arrest last night after his Falcons beat Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos treated fans to another soothing yet empty team statement that tells nothing. Most NFL franchises have the routine down pat. For those that don't, This Given Sunday shares this template of what to say when the fertilizer hits the ventilator. The [insert team name...

Week 2 of the 2012 NFL season is in the books and here are the second set of TOX stats for season along with the year to date numbers for all 32 teams at the bottom. For the second week in a row teams with a +2 TOX stat went 9-1 overall and that brings the year to date number to 18-2 (90%). Teams with a +1 TOX stat went 3-2 in week 2 and that brings that year to date number to 6...

Week 3 QB Rankings

Week 3 QB Rankings Cam Newton tops our list this week after he set a career high in rushing yards last week. Superman (SuperCam) looks near impossible to stop when he decides to run it in the red zone and with the emergence of Brandon LaFell, owners can now be confident that Newton has two legit receivers to throw to. I have RGIII ranked high following week two’s matchup with the...
