As 32 NFL teams prepare for the upcoming draft there are two things that are for certain; quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III will be taken first and second in no particular order by the Indianapolis Colts and the Washington Redskins. Unlike that certainty there are no guarantees as to how either quarterback will perform under the pressures of Sunday and opposing NFL defenses. Could one or both of them turn out to be busts? Here are the top five busts since 1980 that were number one overall picks.
5. Russell Maryland: Maryland was taken first overall at the height of the Dallas Cowboys rebuilding efforts in 1991. Coming out of Miami it was expected that Maryland would be a difference maker on defense and bolster the Cowboys front line in hopes of an eventual Super Bowl run. That run would certainly come but no thanks to Maryland. In five seasons with the Cowboys he totaled 14.5 sacks and 191 tackles. Maryland was the first of an unprecedented three first round draft picks held by the Cowboys that year.
