If there is any unit on the New York Jets that doesn’t need any upgrades for next season it’s the front seven. Muhammad Wilkerson has become a top-tier NFL defender. Sheldon Richardson is fresh off his Rookie of the Year award. Damon Harrison and Kenrick Ellis are one of the best nose-tackle tandems in the league. Davis Harris is coming off a revival season. Calvin Pace is a double-digit sack artist. And DeMario Davis has become one of the fastest linebackers in the NFL. The Jets front seven doesn’t need much help now. But it is getting older. The linebackers are still effective, but they’re aging. And it may be happening quicker than we all realize. Harris is a seven-year vet on the wrong side of 30. Pace will be 34 soon. Even someone like Garrett McIntyre is approaching the 30-year marker all too soon. Maybe it’s not a first-round priority, but the Jets could use some reinforcements at linebacker. Over at the main site, Buck Stanton ranked the top free-agent linebackers for this offseason. Here’s an excerpt of the piece: 10. O’Brien Schofield Schofield’s timing was perfect. Being a player on the Super Bowl champions has made Schofield a semi-attractive option for teams looking to add a pass-rushing outside linebacker. Everyone is looking to pick up a bit of Seattle’s defensive mojo. But there’s a reason the Cardinals were willing to part with Schofield; he’s had a fairly pedestrian four-year career. 9. D’Qwell Jackson Jackson is a tackling machine. When Jackson is able to stay on the field, he’s been a tackling machine during his time in Cleveland. Last year, the Browns defensive captain racked up 140 total tackles, par for the course during his full seasons. And after missing the entire 2010 season, he’s played and started all 48 games in the three years since. Click here to continue reading. New York Jets better hold their breath if they draft USC WR Marqise Lee

Forgive me if I'm hesitant to believe that USC wideout Marqise Lee can deliver in the pros. I'm cheering for him and not against him. The Trojans have produced plenty of highly touted draft picks in recent years that have failed to live up to the stardom from playing at Southern Cal. The not to distance memories of USC draft busts, R. Jay Soward, Mike Williams and Dwayne Jarre...

New York Jets Pre-Free Agency/Draft Roster Breakdown – Defensive Backs

Before you know it, your favorite NFL team will undergo a dramatic facelift and hypothetically improve their prospects for the 2014 season. Don’t forget, however, the 2013 rosters are still set and old faces will play just as important roles as the new ones. As of today (Monday, March 3) there are eight days until NFL Free Agency and the start of the new league year. So, each day...

How the New York Jets can improve on the offensive line

At a glance, the New York Jets’ offensive line has some holes to address. At a closer look, things aren’t so bad. The career-stalwarts in left tackle D’Brickashaw Ferguson and center Nick Mangold are locked into their respective positions entering 2014 for better or worse, but the rest of the unit is somewhat fluid. Let’s start on the outside. Right tackle Austin Howard is...

Is Michael Sam a Good Fit for the New York Jets?

Is Michael Sam a Good Fit for the New York Jets?  (Photo credit: Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) One of the biggest football storylines this offseason has been and will continue to be the story of Michael Sam, the defensive end prospect out of the University of Missouri who announced last month that he is openly gay. If and when he makes a team this September, he will become the first...

Jets look to improve wide receiver corps with free agency around the corner

Free agency can offer an exciting influx of talent for any team with cap space, but Jets fans badly want one position filled more than any other: wide receiver. Pass catchers will be the focal point of the Jets’ offseason, and rightfully so, as they have quite possibly the worst receiving corps in the entire league. The highlights of the group currently are Jeremy Kerley and David...

There was definitely a New York Jets presence at Steinbrenner Field in Tampa on Monday.Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath put on the pinstripes and threw out the first pitch before the spring-training game against the Nationals. And, as usual, Jets head coach Rex Ryan threw his own fashion sense into the mix. Jets to be in on Michael Vick

The New York Jets seemed content with Geno Smith when the 2013 started – but that confidence quickly wained as Smith looked terrible during his rookie season. Granted, yes, it was his freshman campaign and improvement is likely but the Jets simply can’t afford to wait on Smith, which is why they’re expected to be in on free agent quarterback Michael Vick – this according...

Jets' fortunes correlate with Geno Smith's legwork

BY NICK ST. DENISThe New York Jets need quarterback Geno Smith to be efficient through the air in order to be successful on a consistent basis. His legs, however, can make all the difference. At least that was the case in 2013, Smith's rookie campaign. In the Jets' eight losses, Smith rushed for 92 yards on 22 carries for eight first downs and no touchdowns. In their eight...

Top 10 centers and guards in the 2014 NFL Draft

Nick Mangold will be the first and last person to tell you the New York Jets don’t need any help at center, and he’d be right. But that doesn’t mean Gang Green couldn’t use some help at guard. Vladimir Ducasse will finally be out of town next year (pause for a round of applause), and that leaves Brian Winters alone as an uncontested starting guard. And that’s a problem...

Could the New York Jets be gearing up for a run at Julian Edelman?

While writing last week's post on how Riley Cooper's new contract could affect the free agent market for Julian Edelman, I found an interesting nugget from CSNNE's Tom E. Curran: Curran thinks the Jets could be preparing to target Edelman in free agency.  "When you look at a team like the New York Jets, who could sign Edelman, make the Patriots worse, make themselves...

Top 3 Draft Needs for New York Jets

The Jets could hold as many as 12 draft picks, including compensatory selections, in the upcoming NFL draft. Their roster remains mostly devoid of talent at several key positions, including cornerback, tight end and wide receiver. The Jets’ top draft needs are at these positions, where they struggled mightily to sustain a high level of success during the 2013 season. The Jets face...
