Cleveland Browns’ starting running back Trent Richardson has been ruled out of Thursday night’s first pre-season scrimmage against the St. Louis Rams.  While Richardson has been practicing lately, he has been limited due to an accidental kick in the right shin.  This is the second time during camp Richardson has been dinged in the shin.  Browns’ first year coach Rob Chudzinski told Associated Press writer Tom Withers, “We’re going to be smart.”  Chudzinski also noted that if this were a regular season game, then Richardson would be playing.  Chud also assured Browns’ fans that his star running back will get enough practice and be ready to go for the home opener as they host the Dolphins. Backup running back Monterio Hardesty has also been unhealthy; battling an inflamed hamstring tendon.  The Cleveland Plain Dealer’s Mary Kay Cabot reported on Tuesday that, “Hardesty’s roster spot is in jeopardy if he can’t stay healthy.” The Browns have been thrilled with the play of change-of-pace back Dion Lewis.  Offensive coordinator Norv Turner told ESPN Cleveland, “He’s made a lot of plays and you look out here on the practice field, it looks like Darren (Sproles).” That’s very high praise for any back in the NFL.    The only thing for certain is the Browns will do everything in their power to ensure that Richardson will be ready to roll when the Dolphins come to town.  Last season Miami was the 13th rated defense against the run allowing only 108 yards per game.  The refurbished Norv Turner offense will have plenty of time to devise a plan to inflate that stat with a fresh rushing game from Richardson.
