Troy Aikman calls out ‘ridiculous’ NFL officiating during Packers-Giants game
? Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Former NFL quarterback and current broadcaster Troy Aikman called out what he saw as ridiculous officiating during the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants game.

In particular, Aikman was upset with how long it was taking the game’s officials to make a replay call at the end of the half.

“The problem with all this is just make a call, you know?” Troy Aikman said, via SI.com. “I mean, there’s 13 seconds in the half. They’re not gonna — you know, just make a decision. And this is what stops all these games and the officials — I know, they’ve been talked about every week. But this is ridiculous what we’re watching right now. I mean, we see something, it takes five seconds. It takes them five minutes.”

The idea behind replay review is to correct clearly incorrect calls. That means that there needs to be indisputable video evidence to overturn a call. Troy Aikman, at least, clearly believes that being able to make a decision on these calls should go a bit quicker than it was going.

Of course, getting frustrated at a long replay can make sense too. If the call seems clear or unclear, then the call should quickly be overturned or not. On top of that, these long replays mess with momentum and the natural game flow. So, having too many of them does get frustrating.

What is interesting is the timing of Troy Aikman’s criticism. He was clearly frustrated in the moment. However, the NFL probably doesn’t want to hear criticism in the middle of a prime time game. On top of that, this game amid a season where officials have come under a lot of criticism and a penalty in the Buffalo Bills-Kansas City Chiefs game helped decide the outcome the day before.

Troy Aikman on the biggest regret of his career

The first overall pick in the 1989 NFL Draft, Troy Aikman spent his entire career with the Dallas Cowboys, winning three Super Bowls in the process. It was a phenomenal career that landed him in both the Pro Football and College Football Hall of Fame respectively. Still, he has his regrets.

“My biggest disappointment athletically is not having beaten USC while I was at UCLA those two years that I started,” Aikman said.

“Both of those games were for the Rose Bowl. As fun and as good as I think my career was at UCLA, I think that — like with NFL quarterbacks the standard is winning the Super Bowl — at UCLA the standard really was leading your team to a Rose Bowl and I failed to do that.”
