Roy Williams (wide receiver) - Dallas Cowboys

Roy Williams: One of the worst players who made the most money (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Jerry Jones and staff have made some bad personnel moves. I think we could all accept that statement as fact. However, it might be more difficult to come to an agreement about players to whom the Cowboys have paid too much money.

A writer for Bleacher Report has a couple of ideas. Amber Lee has compiled a list of the 50 Worst Players Who Made the Most Money, and two Cowboys made the list.

First, there’s kicker Mike Vanderjagt, who was ranked 49th.

Leave it to the Dallas Cowboys to overpay for the original “idiot kicker.” Seriously, this dude put the “Jag” in “Vanderjagt.”

When the Cowboys signed Mike Vanderjagt, the most accurate kicker in NFL history, in early 2006, they assumed their woes in the kicking game were behind them–they were wrong.

Over the first three months of the season, Vanderjagt’s kicking percentage was just 72 percent—the lowest of his nine-year career. He was released before the end of the season on November 27, 2006.

The average salary of a kicker in the NFL is approximately $850,000; Vanderjagt was signed to a three-year deal worth $5.4 million. Despite being cut less than a season into his contract, Vanderjagt walked out of Dallas with almost $4 million.

Second, there is receiver Roy Williams, who was ranked 6th.

Roy Williams is one of the most overrated, under-producing wide receivers in NFL history. After a promising start to his career in Detroit, Williams was traded to the Cowboys for a first, third and sixth-round pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.

After his arrival in Big D, Williams agreed to a six-year, $54 million contract, with $26 million guaranteed.

Williams called his experience in Dallas “a nightmare,” and the feeling was mutual—he was released in July 2011. That’s right, in the world of Roy Williams, raking in $26 million dollar as a useless fourth receiver is a “nightmare.”

Williams went on to disappoint in Chicago. Wonder who will overpay Williams to consume oxygen in 2012…

Fair enough, but there is another player who belongs on this list. No, it’s not T.O.

You might recall that Dallas not only wasted two first-round picks on Joey Galloway in 2000, but the team also signed him to a seven-year, $42 million contract. That came at a time when the Cowboys were in salary-cap hell. He played in 48 games with Dallas and had a total of 2,341 receiving yards.

Cowboys seeking to put the ‘D’ back in Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys went into this offseason with a singular focus; improve their shaky defense. Not that their defense was all that terrible. They were the 11th ranked defense and held their opponents under 20 points in half their games. Their defense failed to show up when it counted though. Dallas’s defense allowed 30 or more points in four games and three of those came against...

Dallas Cowboys 2012 Draft Grades

6. CB Morris Claiborne A-I don’t normally like when teams with a lot of needs trade up, but the Cowboys traded up 8 spots into the top 6 in a year where the consensus was there were 6 elite prospects and they did it inexpensively, only giving up a 2nd round pick. Claiborne fills a need.81. 3-4 DE Tyrone Crawford C+This pick I didn’t like as much. When you need help at as many...

2012 Dallas Cowboys Draft Grade

It started early enough in the draft, the Cowboys making an aggressive move up and addressing one of their biggest needs on their team. The question is, was it the right move, did they sacrifice too much in order to draft the top cornerback in the draft? Let’s take a look at my 2012 Dallas Cowboys Draft Grade. Here is what I have said about Morris Claiborne from day 1, he is a...

Rumor: Spencer to the Ravens

The Ravens just got the terrible news that Terrell Suggs will be out for the year, and they are in a panic mode. I’ve actually been told they are coming up with some contingency plans and one of them could be a call to Dallas on Anthony Spencer’s availability via a trade. First, the Cowboys would need to consider the trade and likely make a new contract for Spencer to make him...

Cowboys reportedly might have Morris Claiborne return kicks

According to ProFootballWeekly.com, the Dallas Cowboys may end up having rookie cornerback Morris Claiborne return kickoffs this season, which is a big risk since it would increase his chances of getting seriously injured. Most teams don’t have starting players return kickoffs or punts, but the Cowboys seem to feel  the risk is worth it for them to have wide receiver Dez Bryant...

Draft Grades: Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys made a bold move by trading into the top 10, but they got a great deal from the Rams and have now solidified their most glaring weakness on defense. Normally I’m critical of teams that trade up as far as the Cowboys, but only because of the price tag associated with climbing into the top 10. The Cowboys, however, were able to hang on to their 2013 1st-round...

Via: A former starting offensive lineman (Torrin Tucker) for the Dallas Cowboys was arrested Tuesday night and charged with felony drug and weapons charges after police say he sold an undercover officer $20 in marijuana in the strip club where he works. Claiborne wants to play receiver, return kicks

Drafting cornerback Morris Claiborne last week should go a long way in improving the Dallas Cowboys' poor pass defense from the past two seasons. But Claiborne could potentially help in more areas than just covering wide receivers. The player the Cowboys openly admitted was the top defensive player on their draft board could also be used to return kicks, something he did at...
