Two roster bubble Packers who made their case this preseason
Green Bay Packers free safety Micah Abernathy Jeff Hanisch-USA TODAY Sports

During a night highlighted by special teams miscues for the Packers, two players in particular may have earned their spots. Cutdown day to the 53-man regular-season roster is Aug. 30. It is the most significant cut, with teams going from 80 players down to 53. The Packers are going to have to figure out who won’t be on the team anymore, and they probably have a better idea after the game.

Here are two players who proved themselves throughout the preseason and may have earned a spot on the Packers.

RB Tyler Goodson: 29 carries, 107 yards, 1 TD

The battle for the third-string running back has been real and just got even harder. Second-year player Patrick Taylor has been another strong performer for the Packers throughout preseason. It is going to be difficult to choose between Goodson and Taylor, not to mention Dexter Williams.

As coaches hinted at, it is the all-around football player they are looking for at each position. The coaching staff wants versatile, dynamic players, and Goodson has proven to be just that. He has had quite the preseason cutting past defenders and also catching a few passes. His touchdown Thursday night was one of the more impressive highlights from the game.

However, it is just preseason, and stats don’t really mean that much. It’ll come down to the play behind the scenes and during practice that will decide who makes the team. Whether it be Taylor, Goodson or Williams, they will all serve the need the Packers have for young, focused talent.

S Micah Abernathy: 12 Tkls, 1 TFL, 1 PD, 1 INT

Another candidate for a roster spot who has accomplished plenty this preseason is Micah Abernathy. The USFL product has been flying across the field all preseason. He has put on quite the show for Packers fans as well, with a highlight-reel interception against the Saints. Due to the injury to Darnell Savage, Abernathy was signed part way through camp to be a depth safety and potentially make the roster. A couple more injuries occurred throughout camp, which gave way to Abernathy playing significant time this preseason.

Not only has Abernathy been amazing on the field, but he has also been a stud on Twitter. He is clearly a fan favorite from the preseason, and most analysts seem to want him to make the roster. He could certainly become an added boost for the Packers because of his football IQ and ability to play special teams.

It has really been an unknown on who is safe to make the roster or not, but Abernathy could be a solid addition.
