It has been a reoccurring theme this year in the NFL of top teams and players crushing their teams’ hopes. Whether this is through injury or disappointing play, the Oakland Raiders got the best of both worlds in Week 7.

Being the most hyped and analyzed team going into this Week 7, the Raiders were ready to make a statement as a true playoff contender in the AFC. With the loss of Jason Campbell to a broken collarbone, the recently acquired Carson Palmer was set to resurrect this Raider team and lead them to the holy land, Indianapolis (SB XLVI). Palmer cost the Raiders a 2012 first round pick and a 2013 second round pick, which can become a first round pick with a playoff win. This is a very costly trade for the Raiders as they are typically taking away any possible hopes of getting a top college player in the next two drafts. With this said, the Raiders going into Sunday had their hopes high that their franchise was at last saved.

So here are the Sunday Headlines:

-       Darren McFadden leaves game with sprained foot.

-       Carson Palmer replaces Kyle Boller in second half, throws 3 interceptions.

Clearly these are not the headlines the Raider Nation were hoping to see after Week 7, let alone an embarrassing shutout loss to divisional rival Kansas City Chiefs was enough. With the high investment of newly acquired quarterback Carson Palmer, and injury to star running back Darren McFadden, Oakland Raider fans certainly are not too thrilled with how this week played out. Of course McFadden’s foot sprain should not be too serious with the Raiders heading into a Week 8 bye, he should have plenty of time to recover. But the biggest question mark falls upon Carson Palmer, can the his old quarterback find his old form, and give the Raiders the spark they need to become a competitor in the AFC? If only there was an NFL Magic 8 ball…

Palmer will work extra with receivers during the bye

Oakland’s biggest two weeks of the season may come without any games being played.  Carson Palmer is about to take a crash course in the Raiders offense. The team will practice the next two days during the bye week, and then Palmer will work separately with his receivers away from the coaching staff. “Yeah, I…

PFT: Palmer 'can't see' T.O. in Oakland

Carson Palmer isn't clamoring for the Raiders to add T.O., which speaks volumes.

Bye week comes at opportune time for Raiders

The bye week for the Oakland Raiders is coming at just the right time. With new quarterback Carson Palmer still trying to shake off the rust and learn a new offense and new teammates and star running Darren McFadden and other key players nursing injuries, the Raiders can sure use this time to regroup from a 28-0 loss to Kansas City and get back on track with two big division games...

Carson Palmer “can’t see” T.O. coming to Oakland

Last year, Terrell Owens caught 72 passes as a member of the Cincinnati Bengals, where Carson Palmer was the starting quarterback.  Recently, Palmer was working out with Owens.  But now that Palmer is a Raider and Owens is ready to play, Palmer isn’t interested in a reunion. “T.O. and I had a great working relationship,…

Raiders in Transition Period with Carson Palmer

Before Jason Campbell was injured, the Raiders seemed to have an identity and focus. They were a physical, run-first football team cast in the mold of head coach Hue Jackson, an emotional leader who is intent on “building a bully” in the AFC West. The question now is, will the Raiders’ personality change with Carson Palmer at quarterback? Will all the attention...

NFL Power Rankings Week 8: Horrible Football Edition

We are seven weeks into the NFL season and I have no clue what to make of it. Teams are wildly inconsistent and we may have just had the worst week of games yet. We had three nearly unwatchable games (Browns-Seahawks, Broncos-Dolphins, Ravens-Jaguars), the “return” of Carson Palmer, and the worst combination of prime time football games since ‘Nam. The Saints scored...

NFL Week 7 review: Palmer’s woes, Newton’s win and, yes, Tebow

Shutdown Corner wraps up Week 7 of the NFL season. Worst tackling obscured by talented rookie Carolina Panthers rookie Cam Newton is hard to tackle, more in a Ben Roethlisberger "he's tough to tackle" way than the Michael Vick "he's tough to get a hand on" way, but still difficult nonetheless. Newton looked like both those veterans combined, plus a little...

Dalton now the franchise future for ascending Bengals

SEATTLE, Wash. — There was little doubt that TCU rookie quarterback Andy Dalton would be taking the reins of the Cincinnati Bengals' offense in 2011 — with team owner Mike Brown and former franchise quarterback Carson Palmer at loggerheads about where Palmer would ply his trade in the future and Palmer threatening to retire, the move to take Dalton in the second round...
