When the Atlanta Falcons gather in the meeting room at the beginning of each week, they can always count on coach Mike Smith putting one thing on the board. Turnover margin. Smith has made that a priority during his five years as coach, and the Falcons are sure following his lead this season. Atlanta is 5-0 for the first time in franchise history and has a plus-10 edge in turnovers, tied with the New England Patriots for the best mark in the league. The safeties are leading the way. Thomas DeCoud has four interceptions, while William Moore has chipped in with two picks. Both give credit to new defensive coordinator Mike Nolan, saying he has done a good job of disguising coverages and allowing everyone to play to their strengths.

Atlanta Falcons are not better than the Houston Texans

Although the Atlanta Falcons and the Houston Texans have identical records, the Texans appear to be the better team and after watching both teams for a couple of weeks, I’ll stand by this even as Falcons fan.Once the San Francisco 49ers lost, everyone jumped on the Texans bandwagon. These bandwagon jumpers will probably be along for the ride until Houston loses to either the Packers...

Falcons try out a trio of safeties

Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun reported on Wednesday that the Falcons tried out a trio of safeties this week: Sean Baker, David Caldwell, and Brodney Pool. The Falcons likely are kicking the tires on these free agent safeties due to concerns about their depth at the position. William Moore suffered a hip injury during the team’s Week 4 win over the Carolina Panthers and has...

Falcons' Robinson finally fulfilling expectations

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. After taking a look at Dunta Robinson's first two seasons following the Atlanta Falcons' decision to award the cornerback a six-year contract with 25.5 million guaranteed, some Falcons fans might have been left to scratch their heads. Among the most headline-grabbing things that Robinson did in his first two seasons were hits for which he was fined by...

Atlanta Falcons Injury Update

In the NFL, injuries are simply part of the game. The Falcons have seen it first hand this season when they lost Brent Grimes and rookie Bradie Ewing for the season. Let's take a look at which injuries are making the news right now for the Falcons.... Hopefully Nicholas will be able to get on the field vs the Raiders Stephen Nicholas (ESPN NFC South Blog): Outside linebacker...

Falcons' Peters hopes to return soon

Atlanta Falcons defensive tackle Corey Peters, who appeared pretty spry while jumping rope with children at a community function Tuesday, hopes that he can return quickly as his six-week stint on the reserve/non-football injury list is about to end. Peters suffered a stress fracture while working out before the Falcons' offseason training program started. "It was a little...

Once-downtrodden Falcons now among NFL's best

During their dismal first season, the Atlanta Falcons' mascot - a real bird - apparently decided he had seen enough bad football. So, he just flew away. For the better part of the next four decades, plenty of Atlantans wished they could've followed the lead of that prescient falcon. This was the home of the NFL's not-so-lovable losers, a team that always found a way...

Falcons look to continue run vs. Raiders

Off to the best start in team history, the Atlanta Falcons have tried not to make too much of their early accomplishments.Based on the way the Oakland Raiders have played this season, the Falcons appear to have a good chance to continue that success.Looking to remain the NFC's lone undefeated team, the Falcons can help coach Mike Smith match the franchise mark for victories while...

Oakland Raiders (1-3) at Atlanta Falcons (5-0) NFL Week 6 Preview

Follow @Dan Vasta and like Gridiron Grit on Facebook  Oakland is coming off a bye and they can hopefully put together a solid performance to get this season going. Carson Palmer against Matt Ryan is a mismatch on paper since one is running for the MVP whereas the other is just trying to maintain his job and get a few victories down the road. Darren McFadden needs to run the ball...

Atlanta Falcons: Tony Gonzalez, "The Ageless Wonder"

Tony Gonzalez, "The Ageless Wonder" as I like to call him, has made it clear that the 2012 season will most likely be his last season in the NFL.  However, I am going to make a case for why he should stay with the Falcons for one more year, if not more.Coming into this season, Tony G. was regarded as the best tight end in the history of the game.  His career numbers as...

Redskins Injury Report: RGIII Cleared to Practice

After suffering a mild concussion in Sunday's loss to the Atlanta Falcons, it was unclear whether Robert Griffin III would be able to play in next week's game. He has been cleared to take the first step in getting that chance. Doctors have cleared him to practice today. According to Rich Campbell of the Washington Times, Griffin has passed all the concussion tests...

Falcons' Smith isn't all smiles despite undefeated start

Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith plans to make sure that his 5-0 squad stays grounded moving forward. Instead of basking in the glow of the NFC's shiniest record, Smith, unsolicited, rips off a list of things that need to be "fixed" on his team as it prepares to face the Oakland Raiders before heading into a bye week. Among the items were the run defense, the coverage...
