The NFL Landscape Is Changing Now That NFLPA Has Decertified (Source: blogs.bettor.com)
After seventeen days of negotiatons between the NFL and the NFLPA there is finally some resolution on coming to terms on a new CBA, but it’s not the resolution that everyone had hoped.
The NFLPA has faxed in the paperwork to a Minnesota Federal Court to officially start the process of decertifying from the NFL. Apparently the two sides were far apart on the most important issue, who gets the lion share of the 9 billion dollars in revenue generated by the NFL.
The move to decertify is meant to help block the players from a potential lockout by the team owners, simply put the owners cannot lock out the players as there is no longer a union to lockout.
Now the issue will move into the court systems and likely be tried in front of the very player friendly Judge David S. Doty, and it’s believed that the players are likely to be heavily favored in the matter and thus stand the best chance at getting a deal in their best interest.
DeMaurice Smith and the NFLPA have now relinquished all responsibility and right to negotiate on the players behalf, so now it’s up to the court and the players to file suit against the NFL for violating the Collective Bargaining Agreement and establish new anit-trust legislation.
Free agency has been effectively nullified leaving a vast amount of current NFL players in limbo as they are unable to sign or re-sign with teams until a new CBA is put in place. For the Saints this is devastating news considering they have 25 players not under contract.
