Outside linebacker Clark Haggans, a 12-year NFL veteran, is among 18 players released by the Arizona Cardinals as the team reached the NFL's 53-man roster limit. The Cardinals also placed quarterback Rich Bartel on injured reserve, ending his season. Bartel injured a shoulder in Arizona's preseason finale against Denver on Thursday night. Among the other players released are defensive end Ronald Talley, wide receiver DeMarco Sampson, running back Alfonso Smith, linebacker Quan Sturdivant, offensive tackle D.J. Young and tight end Steve Skelton, whose older brother John was picked to be the Cardinals' starting quarterback earlier in the day. Young had a brief try at left tackle following the season-ending injury to Levi Brown, but struggled in a game against Tennessee.

The Arizona Cardinals made 22 roster moves on Friday in order to reach the NFL required limit of 53 players. After an exhaustive quarterback battle in the preseason, the Cardinals announced that John Skelton will be the starting quarterback for week one of the regular season. Expect nothing etched in stone regarding the starting quarterback position this season as Skelton will likely...

Arizona Cardinals: John Skelton Is The Answer At Quarterback

Last year, a team started the season with high hopes. They believed the quarterback which they had acquired via trade and given a lucrative extension to was the answer, while a project QB sat on the bench. Then they got off to a very poor start, and had to put their project in as the starter. Lo and behold, they actually started winning! They wound up finishing 8-8, but that was a big...

Kevin Kolb took not winning starting job in Arizona ‘like a pro’

Arizona Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt announced on Friday that John Skelton had beaten out Kevin Kolb for the Cardinals’ starting quarterback job for Week 1. While both players never really distanced themselves from the other during the competition, Whisenhunt had to choose one of them. So while Skelton can now move forward and readying himself for the regular season opener...

49ers to add OLB Clark Haggans pending physical

According to Matt Barrows the 49ers are going to sign former Cardinals and Steelers defender Clark Haggans. Haggans was released on Friday and will sign with the team Sunday pending a physical. Currently the 49ers have only three outside linebackers, so adding Haggans will give them some more depth on the line and give Brooks, Haralson and Aldon Smith rest from time to time. Haggans...

Report: Cardinals will name starting QB on Friday

With a little more than a week left before the start of the regular season, the Arizona Cardinals still have not named a starting quarterback, but apparently that will change Friday. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt is expected to name either Kevin Kolb or John Skelton as his starting quarterback on Friday, the Sporting News reported Thursday. Whisenhunt's decision has...

QUICK SPIN: Skelton Wins Cardinals Starting QB Jobf

Sometimes you just have to admit that you messed up. That is what the Cardinals are doing. I must admit that I was wrong when in the offseason I said Kevin Kolb wasn't getting a fair shake from the media. I thought he had more in him, apparently not. John Skelton has been awarded the starting QB spot and he earned it more through his leadership and moxie than through great...

John Skelton named starting QB in Arizona

Head coach Ken Whisenhunt has named John Skelton as his starting quarterback to begin the 2012 season, opting to go with the third year signal caller from Fordham University instead of Kevin Kolb. Although Kolb is set to make as much money as Aaron Rodgers this season, Whisenhunt decided that Skelton gives his team the best chance to win. “We put a lot of time and effort in making...

Arizona sends CB Jefferson to Minnesota for picks

The Minnesota Vikings acquired cornerback A.J. Jefferson from the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday for a conditional draft pick in 2013. In bringing in the 24-year-old Jefferson, the Vikings continued their approach of adding youthful depth to a rebuilding roster. Cornerback was an area of concern for the coaching staff with Antoine Winfield entering his 14th season and missed the...

Kolb, Skelton watch as Broncos beat Cardinals

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) -- While Peyton Manning watched, Denver's reserves pulled out a wild one in the desert. Manning and the rest of the Broncos' starters took the fourth game of the preseason off, and Denver got a 44-yard field goal from Matt Prater as the game ended to beat the Arizona Cardinals 16-13 on Thursday night. Omar Bolden, a fourth-round draft pick from nearby...

Bassett-hound faces draw Leach ire

THIS IS GOING to take time. That much is apparent after Washington State struggled to gain any consistency on offense and had no answer for Brigham Young’s first-half hurry-up scheme during Thursday’s 30-6 loss to open coach Mike Leach’s era in Provo, Utah.

New Series: Bold Prediction #6 – QB John Skelton Saves the Day for Larry Fitzgerald

Fordham's John Skelton appears to have the upper hand on the overpaid Kevin Kolb but the Cards have yet to announce a week 1 starter. Some owners might knock perennial All-Pro WR Larry Fitzgerald down their draft baords concerns at QB but that would be a mistake especially if John Skelton ends up under center as most expect will be the case.
