Restricted Free Agent Robert McClain signed his franchise tender on Saturday and will suit up for the Dirty Birds in 2014. This signing, albeit under the radar, adds significant help for the Falcons in their young secondary. Desmond Trufant and Robert Alford should lock down both starting corner spots but McClain should make a positive impact manning the nickel corner position. In 2012 McClain’s impact as the third cornerback was so encouraging the front office decided to cut Dunta Robinson. This past season he made 66 tackles and defended five passes. The five year veteran will be expected to to mentor Trufant and Alford who were the bright spots on a bad defense last season. With the decision to lock up McClain the cornerback position has become an underrated group in the NFC South. Sure, the Falcons may not boast the services of Alterraun Verner but the trio of Alford, McClain and Trufant should be able to contain wide receivers this upcoming season. This move likely will take Atlanta out of the running for a cornerback taken in the draft which will allow for Thomas Dimitroff to spend time evaluating more important areas of need for May, such as finding a safety to replace the jettisoned Thomas DeCoud. The resigning of McClain was mostly a positive move for the Falcons as it shored up a key need and it was done without breaking the bank or spending a draft pick.
