Defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson heard both of those messages from the Denver Broncos in the offseason and complied with both.
The result has been one of the strongest seasons in his seven-year NFL career - and at a bargain to boot.
Playing at 330 pounds, about 40 pounds more than what he weighed in at last year, Vickerson has been occupying two offensive linemen at a time, freeing up Denver's linebackers to make plays.
He has 32 tackles and two sacks. But more importantly, the Broncos defense is ranked fourth heading into Sunday's game against Tampa Bay.
BEST OF MAXIM
Knowshon Moreno has been resurrected from the Denver Broncos’ purgatory. Inactive for the last eight games, Moreno has been called to action with the injury to Willis McGahee. Willis injured his knee last week and is out until the championship round of the playoffs. Quite possibly, this will be Knowshon’s last chance.
His first two touches, one run and one pass resulted in a...

The Broncos are starting to look like to favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The Texans have fallen off in recent weeks and the Patriots don't have enough defense.
After an average Thanksgiving week of picks I'm sitting at 114-63. I need to step my game up as we sprint to the postseason.

Greg Schiano didn't have to follow the NFL closely over the past decade-plus to keep up with the exploits of Peyton Manning.
Tampa Bay's first-year head coach was an assistant with the Chicago Bears when Manning began his pro career in 1998, then spent two years as an assistant at the University of Miami and the next 11 transforming one of college football's worst programs...
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By ARNIE STAPLETON AP Pro Football Writer Tight ends are no longer an afterthought in Denver's passing game.
In 2009, they had all of 27 catches.
Last year, that number was just 30 - not a single one of them in the end zone - as they were basically used as big bruising blockers in Tim Tebow's read-option offense.
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated.) By EDDIE PELLS AP National Writer Before the season begins, almost every team puts these words near the top of a long list of goals: ''Win the division.''
That's all but a foregone conclusion in Denver, though when the Broncos wrap up the AFC West, there won't be much of a celebration. They didn't bring Peyton Manning...

Denver Broncos defensive end Von Miller was fined $25,000 by the NFL on Friday for his hit below the knee of Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman last week.
Miller was penalized for roughing the passer in the second quarter of the Broncos' 31-23 win over the Buccaneers last Sunday. Miller was fined $21,000 last month for a similar infraction against Carolina quarterback Cam Newton...

When the Denver Broncos (8-3) face the Baltimore Ravens (9-2) in Week 15, Ray Lewis could be out on the field at middle linebacker for the Ravens.
Lewis tore his triceps in October, but has been recovering well, according to ESPN:
“Coach John Harbaugh now thinks Lewis will play in the regular season. “That’s a best...
