In an era replete with complex offenses designed to take advantage of the slightest defensive wrinkles, occasionally keeping it simple– oddly enough– can pay the greatest dividends.
Yesterday’s “Sleeper” fake field goal by the San Francisco 49ers which resulted in a touchdown pass from kicker David Akers to wideout Michael Crabtree is a great example.
There was nothing at all elaborate about this trick play, Crabtree simply never left the field, standing on the side of the field unnoticed until the ball was snapped for the field goal.
Akers received direct snap from his normal kicking position and threw a Sunday-in-the-park pass to Crabtree for a touchdown right behind the befuddled Rams special teams unit.
Simple enough, and effective.
