The best thing about preseason NFL football is the fact that it signifies that regular season football is only a couple weeks away. It’s where the starters go through the motions for a couple weeks and the back-ups earn roster spots. The play-calling is very vanilla and games are sometimes tough to watch in the second half. A couple times a year there’s a preseason match-up that garners the excitement of the entire NFL community. Saturday night was one of those times. On Saturday night, the first two picks of the 2012 NFL Draft matched up against each other with Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts vs. RG3 and the Washington Redskins. It was an exciting game where both players showed their teams that they have the potential to be the face of their franchises for the next 5-10 years.

In the Redskins first series, RG3 showed the two things that make him one of the most physically gifted QB’s in the NFL, his speed and his cannon of an arm. On his first pass from scrimmage, RG3 tried to find Pierre Garcon deep but overthrew him by a foot on a ball that he threw well over 55 yds. Two plays later, RG3 was showing his wheels by eluding tackles and getting pass the chains for a 1st down on 3rd and 5. He was solid the rest of the night throwing for 74 yds on 11 of 17 passing and 1 TD. If RG3′s performance was a B+, Luck’s performance was a sold A. Luck was 14 for 23 for 151 yds and 1 TD. Luck’s performance on Saturday showed that he’s one of the most accurate passers to come out in the draft over the past 5 years. When faced with a heavy pass rush, Luck showed an uncanny ability to scramble away from traffic and extend plays. Both players should be fun to watch this coming 2012 season.
