It’s been a tough season so far for the replacement officials in the NFL. It seems to be obvious to almost every NFL player, coach and fan, who’s name isn’t Roger Goodell, that the replacement reps aren’t up to par with the currently locked out officials. We all know that the old officials made mistakes, but the amount of mistakes seemed miniscule compared to what we’ve been seeing these last three weeks. Goodell and the rest of the NFL brass need to give in to the locked out officials’ needs. The amount of money they’re fighting over is so miniscule compared to what the NFL makes, it’s about time for Goodell to just give in. A sacrifice needs to be made for the greater good. With each bad call the replacement officials make, the NFL is loosing more and more leverage.

Although it’s painful, I can deal with some of the bad calls these refs are making but what I can’t deal with is some of the stupid decisions they’re making. The dumbest decision so far came in yesterday’s game between the Tampa Buccaneers and the Dallas Cowboys. On 3rd and 12 for the Cowboys on the Bucs 13 yd line, Tony Romo dropped back to pass and after scrambling tried to find Kevin Ogletree in the back of the end zone. The only problem for Ogletree was that one of the refs threw his hat at Oggletree’s feet and tripped him up, which caused Romo to overthrow him and the Cowboys had to settle for a field goal. The ref threw his hat because he thought Ogletree stepped out of bounds. Using his hat to signify this infraction is the correct thing to do but he should have simply dropped his hat on the sidelines and not in the field of play. I’ve always been puzzled as to the reason why refs throw their flags in the direction of the person who committed the infraction. It doesn’t really make much sense. They can see who committed the penalty and they inform the head ref of the exact infraction before the ref announces it to the field, so why don’t they just drop the flag where they stand or throw it off to the side. That would make a whole lot more sense. Check out the tripping of Ogletree below:
