EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. The Minnesota Vikings added more competition at the wide receiver position Monday, agreeing to terms with former San Diego Chargers receiver Bryan Walters. Walters, 24, was with San Diego for two seasons after being signed as an undrafted free agent out of Cornell in 2010. He had three catches for 27 yards while appearing in four games last season for the Chargers, with two catches and 21 yards coming against Minnesota in the season opener. Walters could also be an option on kick returns. The 6-foot, 190-pound Walters had one catch in week two and went the rest of the year without a reception. He had a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the preseason opener last season and added 14-yard touchdown catch in another preseason game. At Cornell, he had 144 catches for 2,032 yards and 12 touchdowns in four seasons and graduated as the Ivy League's all-time leader in punt (972) and kickoff (2,790) return yards. He's the school's all-time leader in all-purpose yards. Walters, tweeted the news on Monday and the Vikings officially announced the addition later in the day. Walters adds depth and more options to a receiving corps that will need to be improved in order for second-year quarterback Christian Ponder to show improvement. The Vikings have Percy Harvin coming off his best season in the NFL. Michael Jenkins should return after missing the final five games last season with a knee injury. Minnesota has also re-signed Devin Aromashodu this offseason and has young receivers Emmanuel Arceneaux, Stephen Burton, Kerry Taylor and Kris Adams on the roster.Follow Brian Hall on Twitter.
