Minnesota Vikings cornerback Chris Cook was charged with felony domestic assault on Tuesday after allegedly trying to strangle his girlfriend over the weekend.

The 24-year-old Cook became upset on Saturday when he learned that the woman spoke to an ex-boyfriend, according to the criminal complaint which was filed by the Hennepin County Attorney's Office.

According to the complaint, Cook threw the woman on the bed at his home and grabbed her neck. When she attempted to free herself, he sent her crashing into a wall before trying to strangle her again.

The incident left the woman bloodied and sobbing. Cook was later arrested after a neighbor reported yelling and screaming from across the street, police detailed.

The NFL confirmed that it is looking into the incident.

Cook missed this Sunday's game against the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers because he was still in jail.

The Vikings released a statement on Saturday.

"The Minnesota Vikings are aware of the incident involving Chris Cook," the Vikings said in a statement. "We take this matter very seriously and are still gathering all the details of the incident. We will not have any further comment at this time."

This is Cook's second brush with the law in eight months. The second-year defensive back was charged last March with brandishing a gun during a fight, but was acquitted of that charge.
