The evolving drama that has been Josh Freeman’s season took another turn today as he was named the starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. His first game will be against the New York Giants on Monday Night Football.
Freeman will be the third starting quarterback for the Vikings this season. He was claimed off of waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers two weeks ago. Christian Ponder, the Vikings 2011 first round pick, began the season as the team’s starting quarterback.
He suffered a rib injury against the Cleveland Browns and has missed the last two games. Ponder did return to practice last week in a limited role.
Enter former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Matt Cassel who was signed as a free agent in the off season. Vikings fans clamored for Cassel to get on the field as the team struggled to an 0-3 start. They got their wish as Cassel started for the Vikings in London against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Cassel played well throwing for two touchdowns and committing no turnovers en route to a, 34-27, Vikings victory.
Coming off their bye week Cassel’s strong play didn’t continue as he was awful against the Carolina Panthers in a, 35-10, home loss. So the Matt Cassel experiment came to a quick conclusion something that most Kansas City Chiefs fans would have enjoyed in regards to his time as their starting quarterback.
The Vikings might as well see what they have in Freeman since they signed him to a $3 million dollar contract after he was waived by the Buccaneers.
It is a common thought in the NFL that when you have two starting quarterbacks you really have none. So what is it when a team has three starting quarterbacks?
A mess. Minnesota has officially entered desperation mode by naming Freeman as their starter. Is the Vikings season doomed by starting their third different quarterback in just six games?
Of course not, but history suggests otherwise. Who knows in this crazy world that is the NFL maybe Freeman as the Vikings starting quarterback may be just what they needed?
We will find out on Monday night in the Meadowlands as the winless New York Giants seek their first win of the season against the Vikings.
