The Green Bay Packers rolled the dice when they released linebacker Desmond Bishop and it could backfire twice if he proves to be fully recovered with the Minnesota Vikings. The team felt Bishop was expendable after a severe hamstring injury, but economics surely played a large role in the decision. So now, this decision might backfire. Bishop signed a one-year; prove he’s still got it deal with a direct threat to the Packers in the NFC North. If he slides into Minnesota’s starting line-up, the Packers may have made a major mistake. According to Tyler Dunne of JSOnline, the team’s move to let Bishop go is a risk or reward gamble that could come back to haunt them. Dunne writes: Under Thompson, Green Bay has been a team that identifies and values so-called “core players.” On offense, starters such as T.J. Lang and Josh Sitton earned the label and were paid accordingly. This year, the Packers must decide if players such as Evan Dietrich-Smith and Sam Shields are as well. Bishop’s track record isn’t extensive, but he has been such a “core” player on a contender. A valued difference-maker, a player worth being patient with through the recovery of an injury right now. The numbers have been recycled aplenty in this space. In 28 games, Bishop totaled 218 tackles, eight sacks and four forced fumbles. And in the postseason, he earned a four-year contract through multiple, season-saving plays.
