Jaguars defensive tackle Terrance Knighton suffered a serious eye injury at nightclub when he was hit in the face with a vodka bottle, The Florida Times-Union reported Tuesday, citing a source.
Knighton underwent surgery following the attack early Sunday morning at the Pure club in Jacksonville, which the source said was not initiated by the NFL player.
Knighton was sent home later Sunday before returning to be assessed at a doctor's appointment Monday afternoon.
A source told the newspaper prior to that appointment that Knighton's condition appeared to be serious.
Knighton's mother, Rochelle Knighton, confirmed Monday that surgeons repaired her son's eye itself, rather than the skin or bone surrounding it. She said he was "in good spirits."
Police did not file a report on the incident, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office confirmed.
The Jaguars, who drafted Knighton out of Temple in 2009, said the events of the night were being investigated in a statement that confirmed the fourth-year starter's Sunday surgery.
