First-round draft pick Sylvester Williams signed his rookie contact and will begin practice on Friday (Photo Credit: The Denver Post)I was hoping to start training camp on a lighter note. Give you a Day 1 analysis, or just go on and on about my fantasy league…but no, earlier this week more bad news out of Denver broke. When the Von Miller story erupted on Monday morning, I thought about writing my article then. However, with all the anonymity of it at the point, I was not sure how many times I could write “anonymous” in one article without losing my mind. On Monday, reports were released that the Denver Broncos could lose their all-pro outside linebacker, Von Miller, to a four-game suspension. The Denver Post, citing anonymous sources, (see what I mean?) reported that Miller tested positive for marijuana and amphetamines his rookie season. However, players who test positive for recreational or illegal prescription drugs are not suspended after the first positive test, but are punished for positive tests once in the league’s drug program, per the NFL’s substance abuse policy. On Wednesday, via denverbroncos.com, Miller did confirm that he plans to appeal the suspension, with the help of the NFL Players Association. “Out of respect for this being an ongoing situation, I can’t really touch on further details about it,” Miller said. He also took to Twitter on Monday, claiming his innocence. “Seeing reports abt 4 game susp. I know I did nothing wrong. I’m sure this’ll be resolved fairly. Disapp. Broncos have 2 open camp like this.” –Von Miller (@MillerLite40) However, Miller is still the first-team linebacker today at the opening of training camp, and will continue to be according to Head Coach John Fox. “Right now, there is no (suspension) pending to my knowledge. (Miller) is going to get every rep with the first-team until we hear something different,” Fox said. Though there have been talks about Miller’s backup, Shaun Phillips, taking on Von Miller’s role if suspended, but Coach Fox says the team has not talked about what to do if the suspension is upheld, and Miller misses the first four games. When asked if smoking marijuana was part of his lifestyle, Miller replied “Absolutely not.” On a lighter note, training camp did begin today, and the Broncos just had first-round pick defensive end Sylvester Williams sign his rookie contract. With all of the suspensions in the front office, and a possible, pending suspension on the Broncos’ best defensive player for the first four games, I, and fans alike, can only hope that from here on out, there will be only good news coming from the Mile High City.
