Washington coach Steve Belichick takes a subtle dig at dad Bill Belichick with a savage response while talking about the biggest difference between the two

Steve Belichick doesn’t speak much about himself or his relationship with Bill Belichick . But during a recent press brief, the new Washington Huskies defensive coordinator had a lot to say about his father.

On Wednesday, Steve Belichick and Jedd Fish spoke with the media ahead of their Pro Day. The reporters asked the 37-year-old the main difference between him and his dad, Bill Belichick.

We definitely have similarities. I have a job, but he doesn't. He knows that. Belichick relied

More importantly, the majority of what he has learned over the years is from the former New England Patriots head coach.

“I look up to my dad; he’s a mentor to me, but I’m myself. Excited to get on the field and work with these guys, work with the kids, and recruit kids. I’m just going to be myself, not try to be him,” he said.

Steve Belichick over the years, from the Patriots to Washington

The younger Belichick studied at Rutgers University; he played both lacrosse as a long-stick midfielder and football under coach Gregg Schiano as a long snapper. Then he opted to learn his trade with the Patriots under his father.

Bill Belichick had won three Super Bowls by the time Steve became his defensive assistant from 2012 to 2015. From then on, he took on several roles. First, the safety coach from 2016 to 2018, then the defensive backs coach in 2019, outside linebackers from 2020–2021, and the linebackers for the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

Older Belichick finally ended his 24-year tenure with the Patriots, winning a total of six rings and nine AFC championships. The younger Belichick also left the franchise and went searching for a job. He did not have to wait too long to find a new gig.

Steve joined as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies and will be working with Jedd Fish. After successfully rebuilding the Arizona college football program, Fish filled the vacant Washington head coach job left by Kalen DeBoer, who went to Alabama following the retirement of Nick Saban.

Belichick now has the chance to prove his worth and start afresh with the Huskies, away from the shadow cast by his legendary father. As for the 71-year-old, he had interviews with several NFL teams, including the Atlanta Falcons and the Washington Commanders. However, the latest developing news is that ESPN is pursuing him as an analyst.
