Stats don't lie. And neither do disgruntled Redskins fans. The Washington Redskins have essentially scrapped their 2012 identity for the sake of preserving their quarterback. But was this offensive face-lift worth it? Here are the Stats: The Redskins in 2012 were ranked No. 1 in the NFL in rushing attempts at 33.5 per game. So far in 2013, the Skins are ranked 27th in the NFL. The pistol offense certainly facilitated the Redskins' running game, but why abandon the run all together? Especially when you have the No. 2 rushing back in the NFL from 2012? Offensive face-lift or not, Mike Shanahan cannot be happy being ranked 27th in run attempts. Either the Redskins go back to their Shanahanian roots or their defense will continue to set records in yards allowed. In 2012, the Redskins threw only 8 interceptions, ranking No. 1 in the NFL. So far in 2013, after only 3 games, they've already thrown 4 INTs, 5th worst in the NFL. Sure, this is kinda like getting more speeding tickets when you drive more often. But when your defense has set an NFL record for yards allowed within the first 3 games, your team has little margin for error. Turnovers are magnified and ball protection is critical. The most critical statistic to the Redskins' and RG3 fans has to be that Washington is ranked No. 5 in Quarterback hits allowed so far in 2013. How can this happen? Sure, the Redskins are working to protect RG3, but how can this statistic be true? The "Pistol" offense used by Washington last year was supposed to be unsafe for Griffin. But after looking at the numbers, not only is the Pistol more effective in yards and points earned, but it seems to be safer for RG3. In 2012 the Redskins ranked 12th in quarterback hits allowed. That's not terrible or "unsafe" for RG3. It all adds up to: time in the pocket. Under the Redskins' current (drop back and pass style) offensive scheme the Redskins have actually given up more hits on RG3 so far this year. Not to mention more interceptions, and ultimately, less wins. The stats don't lie and it really doesn't add up. Scrapping your offensive scheme isn't saving RG3, it's hurting him- and the team as well. Either Mike and Kyle Shannahan go back to the Pistol Offense and getting Alfred Morris the ball, or they can go ahead and scrap the rest of the Redskins 2013 Season.
