The Washington Redskins’ biggest takeaway from the first preseason game was the stunning play of Kirk Cousins. Cousins completed six out of seven passes for 52 yards and one TD. But beyond the stats was his poise in the pocket and his decision making. Now with the caveat that this was only two series and we don’t want to overreact, how can you not feel more secure about the Washington Redskins' QB future? With Kirk Cousins as the primary backup there is no reason to worry if Robert Griffin, III can’t go on Opening Day.The added bonus is that Cousins is heightening his trade value and building the hype and his own personal brand. Look at what Peter King said on Twitter:“Say you're a low-first-rd team next April w/QB need. MIss on Bridgewater. Why not get Cousins from Bruce Allen for that first-rd pick?”Now this depends on a few factors:1) RG3 has to be healthy and coming off a great season. The Redskins would be foolish to trade Cousins without feeling secure about RG3’s future.2) The 2014 QB draft class: depending on who ends up coming out of the draft, Cousins’ value could greatly increase. There are five QBs who could go in the top 10 (Teddy Bridgewater, Tajh Boyd, Johnny Manziel, A.J. McCarron, and David  Fales) and that’s not including any sleepers emerging.3) The better option would be to wait until 2015 and trade Cousins then. This would allow the Redskins to have two more seasons of Cousins backing up RG3. The 2015 class is much weaker and would heighten Cousins’ trade value.4) The other factor is that Cousins is a consummate professional and has used his time on the bench productively. He has focused on learning the playbook and the system to put himself in position to succeed when the time comes. It is not stretch to say that Cousins is worth a first round pick. If RG3 is worth three first round picks, a seasoned Cousins is worth at least one.Mark Schlereth said this:“I would say there’s probably 10 teams right now that he could walk into and be the starter, or at least compete for that starting job and give them an upgrade.”One of those ten teams will pay the price to acquire Kirk Cousins and give him a chance. But right now, Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins have one goal in mind. If Cousins continues to play well, the ‘Skins will do right by him when the time comes. For the time being, though, the Washington Redskins should feel great about the QB situation for the next two seasons. That is the biggest takeaway from the Redskins’ win over the Tennessee Titans.Follow me on Twitter: @fantasy_cyril or email me at fantasy_cyril@yahoo.com
