Found June 06, 2012 on My Sports Rumors:

It appears that Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden will be named starter pretty soon if you listen to coach Pat Shurmur. Shurmur indicated he’d like to select his starters “sooner rather than later” and that his QB battle is shaping up much like his last one.

Browns coach Pat Shurmur hinted today that he could name rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden his starter by the start of training camp in late July.

He said he’d like to name the starter “sooner rather than later.”

He said the competition is playing out here much like it did in St. Louis in 2010, when he said they named No. 1 overall pick Sam Bradford the starter at the beginning of training camp. (Cleveland Plain-Dealer)

Personally, I’m not surprised that Weeden will be the starter but I am a little surprised they will hand him the keys to the offense so quickly. All this means is that he’s must have really impressed the coaches during his work with the first team during mini-camps and the last OTA. “He’s quickly getting a feel for his receivers,” said Shurmur.

I find it impressive that Shurmur compares the situation to Sam Bradford and A.J. Feeley. My question is can he have the same instant success?

Brandon Weeden proving to be the starting quarterback of the Browns

When Brandon Weeden was selected with the 22nd pick in the 2012 NFL draft, the Cleveland Browns knew they were obtaining a mature quarterback from Oklahoma State who already dealt with the likes of Justin Blackmon and had success doing so. The fourth quarterback taken in the draft is a 28-year-old rookie but his age

The Cleveland Browns, Brandon Weeden is out to prove that “Age aint nothing but a number”

Stop me if you have heard this one before. Kid walks on the football field and throws the prettiest 55 yard pass that you could see. Enough Zip so that the ball only lifts 15 yards off the ground and when the receiver catches the ball it’s still moving with velocity. You think you have found the next great QB, until he tells you “I’m a baseball player”.  To often players...

Browns getting true competitor in Weeden

BEREA -- Brandon Weeden stood at a podium at Cleveland Browns minicamp and spoke about his days as a minor league pitcher in the New York Yankees organization He talked of guys who hit him well, then he was asked if he ever hit anybody intentionally. Without hesitation, Weeden said: "Oh yeah." Then he smiled, as if the notion of not using the brushback pitch was absurd...

Browns could name Brandon Weeden starter before Training Camp

Brandon Weeden was a 1st round pick of the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL Draft, but, as the Browns are doing with all of their rookies, they’re making Weeden earn the starting job from incumbent Colt McCoy. However, Weeden is impressing in OTAs and may not have to wait much longer to be named the starter. Head Coach Pat Shurmur said today that he’d like to name starters ...

Shurmur wants to name QB sooner rather than later

When Pat Shurmur spoke to the media today, he didn’t name a starting quarterback, but he spoke about the desire to name a starter “sooner rather than later.” Will Burge from ESPNCleveland points out on his twitter that Shurmur said it not once but three separate times. That’s good news for those fans that want to do everything possible to avoid quarterback controversy. Still...

Weeden opens minicamp with Browns' starters

Rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden opened the Browns' minicamp with the first-team offense after rotating with Colt McCoy during the team's six OTA practices. However, coach Pat Shurmur still won't get dragged into a conversation about who is ahead or who he expects to win the starting job. "I think philosophically you install the offense for all of the players...

Could the Browns offense benefit from contract years?

Watson celebrates (excessively) - (Photo: John Kuntz / PD) The Browns imported quite a bit to their offense from this most recent NFL draft between Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and right tackle Mitchell Schwartz. Meanwhile Mike Holmgren has been on record predicting a “big jump” for the team this year. If that ever comes to pass, the rookies will certainly be a part of the...

Pat Shurmur and the Burden of Proof

Of all the people in Berea with something to prove to the totality of Browns fans, Pat Shurmur might very well top the list. Even with all the built in excuses and whether or not you care to take them into account, it is undeniable that Pat Shurmur hasn’t proven much yet. He appears to have the respect of his players. He seems to have the backing of his bosses Mike Holmgren and...

Browns begin mini-camp; all players in attendance

Phil Dawson was in camp today after skipping the voluntary portion of OTA’s. Pat Shurmur indicated that everyone has indeed reported for the mandatory mini-camp, and that there are plenty of reps to go around- “Shurmur feels there are enough reps during practice as well as the preseason for everyone regardless of position. He added that he is anticipating being able to distribute...

Shurmur: Mohamed Massaquoi is Making Plays

[Mohamed Massaquoi] is looking better and I expect a lot from him. He expects a lot from himself, I’m sure when you go ask him, he’ll tell you that. I see a much healthier Massaquoi. Mo looks good, he’s making plays. I think he’s getting comfortable with all of the quarterbacks and he’s having a good camp. I think we remember seeing him coming into camp last year injured...
