This will be my first article where I personally rank team defenses for the upcoming scoring period.  One of the things that continues to mystify me, is that everyone else in the fantasy world continues to rank fantasy defenses based on how few points they give up to their opponents.  In the NFL, that is all well and good, in fantasy football?  It makes no sense whatsoever.

To illustrate my point, the 49ers are widely regarded as the top defense in the NFL, and were drafted in the 9th or 10th round of fantasy drafts (which I advised against quite strongly).  So far in 2012, the 49ers have accrued 14 fantasy points through 3 weeks.  14!  Not even 5 fantasy points a week.  That ranks the San Francisco 49ers as the 25th overall fantasy defense so far in 2012, yet most other websites I look at continue to project the 49ers as the top defense to start for the upcoming scoring period.

The truth of the team defense/ special teams category is that it is largely based on return TD’s and pick 6?s.  For my projections I basically took into account 2 categories:

1 – How many fantasy points has that defense scored so far this year?

2 – How many turnovers does their opponent have this season?

I feel that there are plenty of fantasy owners out there looking for projections based on the actual MATCHUP, and not just how good the defense is.  For matchup purposes, if your DEF faces a team that doesn’t take care of the ball, they have a better chance of scoring a defensive TD.

I have included my turnover table at the bottom of my rankings, so you can see which teams take care of the ball the best, and which are the most prone to turning the ball over.

As always I welcome discussion, this will be the first time I have put together these weekly ranking projections, if there is something you feel I am missing, or you like the rankings and want to see them continue, log in to the forums and let me know – KJ

These rankings are exclusive to fantasyteamadvice.com as we are the only website that projects using this particular formula.  We had so many searches for which defense to start/sit, that these rankings became necessary on a weekly basis.  Keep in mind these are not projections for the rest of the season, just week 4.

Favorable matchups against teams that turn the ball over are in red

Unfavorable matchups against teams that take care of the ball and don’t turn it over are in blue.
