When LB Jerod Mayo earned a contract extension last week, all eyes turned to Patriots WR Wes Welker. He’s locked up only through this season, facing the prospect of the franchise tag.
Seems like a good time to talk to Welker about that and his future. So, colleague Karen Guregian did in her article today after attending a Bonk Breakers event with Welker.
As she noted, Welker is likely to get the franchise tag at least once, and he no doubt knows that. Locking him up for the long-term seems far-fetched, at this point in the negotiations. Still, Welker is a good dude and a team guy.
He spoke about Mayo’s contract… and his own.
“I’m happy for Jerod,” Welker told Karen. “That’s an awesome deal,” Welker said. “For me, I just have to concentrate on myself and hope that stuff will take care of itself in the end.”
Mayo has security. Welker does not. He doesn’t want to address that… but he can only be normal in considering the possibilities.
