It’s not often that teams move off in a different direction from a starting offensive lineman coming off a Pro Bowl season, but all signs are indicating that the Packers are set to do just that with center Scott Wells this off-season.

According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers and Wells are far apart in contract discussions and the team isn’t buying into the notion promoted by Wells and his agent that he should be paid as a top five center in the league.

Wells, 31, had his most impressive season to date last year, earning a trip to the Pro Bowl in Hawaii as a result, but as a slightly undersized zone blocking center, his value to the Packers isn’t as great as it would seem.

Wells is willing to go into the free agent market this off-season to prove his worth, and while Green Bay hasn’t ruled out resigning him, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that he’ll be playing someplace else this fall.

Teams likely to be interested in Wells’ services include Indianapolis, Atlanta, and Kansas City. All three are fairly close to Wells’ home in Nashville and could potentially have a need for a top tier starter at the position.
