At the start of the season it looked as if Wes Welker was getting cut out of the New England offense. His slow start had Boston newspapers flowing about how Welker’s days are numbered and Bill Belichick was doing his drive down the price routine again. After giving Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez new contracts, the fact that Welker couldn’t come to an agreement, led some to believe things have change in New England. However, the Patriots and Welker know it’s a long season, and they have been grooming Julian Edelman to become another feature receiver (something they sorely need). Outside of Welker and Edelman, only Brandon Lloyd is a viable option at wide receiver. Early it looked as if Welker was on his way out, but now he looks like the same old guy he’s always been. Welker spoke to 790 The Ticket in Miami with The Dan LeBatard Show about his slow start. “I think it’s just part of the growing pains of football. You have ups and downs and just kind of work through them and just keep working hard and trying to make plays for your team. Lately, that’s been the case.” “I know that the coaches believe in me and my teammates and everything else. I knew it’s a long season, and just to keep on working and just keep on staying in it. I think it’s just the way Coach had [the starting lineup] at the time, and I had to respect that and just keep on moving forward.” var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
