New England Patriots star wide receiver Wes Welker is using every avenue and whatever it takes to capture a long-term lucrative contract. He hopes that’s it with his current team but has come out and said that he will also test the free agent market first.Hearing this I can only imagine when there is smoke there’s fire. This can’t be good for the New England Patriots because losing a star player like Welker can be a major blow. There will be fans and critics that will come out and say “let him go”.The reason why they feel this way is because of his crucial drop passes in the playoffs. One was in last year’s Super Bowl loss to the New York Giants. We can sit back and say that Welker folds under pressure but I don’t think he did. Mistakes happen but it’s more critical when you make them in the playoffs in front of millions of people watching. We saw this past season the New England Patriots slap the franchise tag on Welker and paying him $9.5 million for the year. They don’t want to do that this coming season because of the 20 percent raise they’d be on the hook for. I feel that they should just pay the guy because he’s a superstar WR and a keeper in my eyes.Since Welker has been with the New England Patriots he’s been their leading receiver with 672 receptions, 7,459 yards, and 37 touchdowns. He’s been everything that they wanted him to be and a lot more. To be the main target for one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history in Tom Brady to throw to is a big deal. There will be teams lining up for his services. I can see teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, San Diego Chargers, and Denver Broncos to name a few to try to sign him. What’s he worth all depends on the market and what the team is willing to pay him.I hope that Wes Welker gets the deal he’s looking for from either the Patriots or another team out there. But at the age of 31 and being a wide receiver, I don’t see more than a 3 year deal in the works.
