Following a welcome home-esque performance by Jamaal Westerman on Sunday against the Washington Redskins, defensive coordinator Mike Pettine announced the linebacker has reclaimed his starting role in the base defense from Garrett McIntyre. Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine said Jamaal Westerman has supplanted Garrett McIntyre as the starting outside linebacker in the base defense. McIntyre had started the past three games. Westerman started against the Dolphins in October. “I could say that,” Pettine said when asked if Westerman is ahead of McIntyre. “That’s good competition between those two.” In Sunday’s game against the Redskins, Westerman replaced McIntyre after Roy Helu ran wild on the Jets early in the game. Westerman took the majority of the snaps in the base defense. “You get into certain positions where it’s ‘Hey, let’s feet the hot hand,’ ” Pettine said. “And Westerman came in and did a nice job, but I think both those guys know that they’re probably going to end up sh
