DAVIE, Fla. Five rookie quarterbacks are scheduled to start opening week games on Sunday: Andrew Luck (Indianapolis), Robert Griffin III (Washington), Ryan Tannehill (Miami), Brandon Weeden (Cleveland) and Russell Wilson (Seattle). Its the first time thats happened in more than 40 years. Last year, only two rookie quarterbacks Carolinas Cam Newton and Cincinnatis Andy Dalton started in Week One. Its going to be a challenge for Ryan, said Dolphins coach Joe Philbin, whose Dolphins open on the road at Houston. No doubt about it. Itll be a challenge for each of the rookies. In the previous three seasons, a total of eight rookies have basically been their teams starting quarterback. The best quarterback rating was last year, when Newton finished 15th in the league with an 84.5 rating. The best record was 9-7, shared by Dalton last season and the Jets Mark Sanchez in 2009. Both teams made the playoffs, and the Jets, fueled by a strong defense and a clock-controlling ground game, ...

Is Ryan Tannehill the next Dan Marino?

In the entire history of the Miami Dolphins, there have been only two quarterbacks to be considered the best in the franchise in addition to being the best in the history of the NFL. Those quarterbacks were Bob Griese and Dan Marino. Miami has really been spoiled with having two Hall of Fame quarterbacks in [...]

Marino eager to see how Tannehill fares

MIRAMAR, Fla. Come Sunday afternoon, Ryan Tannehill already will have something on Dan Marino. Tannehill will become the first Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback to start an opener. Marino didnt get the call until the sixth game of his rookie season in 1983, which actually didnt sit too well with him. My expectations were to come in and start right away, Marino said on Tuesday...

Tannehill focused on present, not Miami's past

DAVIE, Fla. There were two Chads. There was a Jay and a Ray. There was a Brian and now theres a Ryan. The number of quarterbacks to have started games for the Dolphins since the legendary Dan Marino retired after the 1999 season is soon to hit 17. And is it unique that rookie Ryan Tannehill, who will start Sundays opener at Houston, wears No. 17? Well, maybe not. Daunte Culpepper...

Lauren Tannehill and the Ladies of Hard Knocks 2012

This season, HBO’s “Hard Knocks” documentary series followed the Miami Dolphins. And while the Fins may not be loaded with the talent to make a playoff push during the 2012 season, the players will certainly be happy when they get home. Yes, the women featured on the show proved they have the talent to go even further than their boyfriends or husbands. In fact, they may have...

Yep. Chad Johnson got a tattoo of his estranged wife

There are a few things that might stand out from this years edition of Hard Knocks featuring the Miami Dolphins. Maybe it was Ryan Tannehill’s wife, or his phone number, but most likely it was Chad Johnson, even though he was off the team before we could all get used to him in teal. His [...]

David Garrard Released by Dolphins, Leaving Matt Moore to Back Up Ryan Tannehill

MIAMI -- Quarterback David Garrard has been released by the Miami Dolphins, leaving Matt Moore as the veteran backup to rookie starter Ryan Tannehill. Garrard signed in March and climbed atop the depth chart in training camp before he was sidelined by a left knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery Aug. 11. In his absence, Tannehill claimed the starting job for Sunday's...

Game Preview: Dolphins vs. Texans

TGIF! It’s a football Friday and the first Dolphins game of the season is only 2 days away. Things are getting exciting as the Dolphins should have only one thing on their minds right now and that’s pulling off the huge upset against the Texans, although I wouldn’t hold my breath. Yesterday I took a poll, and 20-13 voted they thought a Win is more important than a strong week...

Dolphins seeking more takeaways in 2012

While enduring three consecutive losing seasons, the Miami Dolphins have ranked last in the NFL in takeaways with 59. Coincidence? They don't think so. New coach Joe Philbin says his team must start finding a way to win the turnover battle. The Dolphins go into Sunday's opener at Houston lightly regarded because they're relying on rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill to...

Texans Players to Watch: Dolphins Edition

With the 2012 season fast approaching, expectations have never been higher for a Texans’ team.  In fact, some “experts” are predicting not only a repeat AFC Championship but also a Super Bowl appearance.  But, let’s not get carried away – they still have to play the games. This Sunday the Texans will play host to the Miami Dolphins, who feature a rookie quarterback in...

When will the roster churning end in Miami ?

Something that sets winning organizations from others who struggle is consistency. There is an expression, “the family who plays together, stays together”, the same can apply to a football team. Teams that have had the ability to gel together and build relationships over the years generally perform better on the football field. This can be seen on a football team, with QB...

Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans Week 1 NFL Pick

Miami Dolphins (0-0) at Houston Texans (0-0) Buy tickets for this game If you’ve been following all of my picks, you’d know I love betting against rookie quarterbacks week 1. They tend to, predictably, struggle in their first NFL action. Since 1994, rookie quarterbacks have completed 55% of their passes, averaged 6 yards YPA, and thrown twice as many picks as touchdowns during...
